    mawww wantttt

  • Finally picked up the frame on Saturday. The previous owner informed me it was from 1995. The paint is okay (more than okay for a pub bike) but I need to source a plastic bottom bracket cable guide. Looks like a few trips to some LBS's today because I wanted to build it up tonight.

    EDIT: Found one. $6. Easy.

  • Just been offered some Speedplay Drillium pedals for $70.

This bike is getting expensive... musn't. spend. money. on. beater. bike. must. save. money. for. 'cross. rebuild.

  • Speedplays on a beater?! What are you gonna do carry a pair of tongs in your basket?

  • Initially I thought you meant tongs, like these:

Implying I would be BBQ'ing a lot come summer, but then I realised you meant thongs.

The Speedplay Drillium pedals are a platform / MTB pedal.

  • They are nice.

  • Started putting it together. Was interstate all weekend, got home late last night, and had to work today, plus I needed to rebuild my wife's bike after we took our bikes on our trip with us, so I didn't get as much done tonight as I would have liked.

Here's where I've got so far. Wheels were fitted to I could actually see how it will look, same with the bars and saddle. Still not 100% sold on black risers... Might try the chrome ones again.

Having some issues with the downtube shifter bosses not being removable (at least I don't think they are?) so my Shimano levers aren't sitting flush or going to work properly. Fuck.

Anyway, hopefully I'll finish it off on Wednesday night.

  • Oh, and I'm liking the yellow paint more and more now.

  • Yellow is good. Will look even better with some pub scratches on it!
    PS wash your walls.

  • PS wash your walls.

It's the bike room, which isn't in the house... so theres no point. It's also why the floor is MDF covered in grease spots and drips of paint.

  • So the first ride in was fine. The brakes a bit crappy, but they are just CX cross top levers, so I can't expect too much.

Having the weight at the front on such a light frame is interesting as well. If only it was fixed, whip skids for days!

I just need to get some rubber cable guide things for the rear brake cable, tighten all the chain ring bolts (I've lost my tool and one wouldn't tighten properly last night) and put some cable ends on the brake and shifter cables. All of that will be done tonight.

I'm running 700x25c tyres at 80psi and it rides fine. Doesn't feel any more harsh that any of my steel track bikes. Could probably fit 28's on there, but it may affect the clearance with the rack.

Oh, and using pedals without clips and straps or that aren't clipless is weird. I couldn't get my feet in the right spot. Just using some old MKS touring pedals for now.

All in all, pretty happy with the whole build. I reckon it came together for under $100 as well.

If I get some spare $$$, I'll get some different pedals and wider chrome risers.

  • looks boss

  • yep

  • This is what I orginally saw that made me what a riser-ed road bike with a front rack...

I think I was successful in making my own version.

  • V nice! Under $100 AUD!? Even nicer!

  • If anyone else gets the same feeling as I do when they look at this thread.. I feel we may be seeing a few more bikes like this in the next few months.
Currently just thinking about how daft it was to sell off basically all the parts I'd have needed to build something like this to a "friend" at very low prices.

  • I got some other brake levers tonight. The cross top levers are okay, but because they push the cable, not pull, they don't have the stopping power that I want.

The new levers look like this:

Have ridden it about 20k's all up so far. Rides pretty well, even with the front weight.

  • Who can change this thread title to "Cannondale Rack"?

  • This is sick.. I love risers and front rack on an old roadie

  • Nice job, I posted it here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread47731.html

  • Nice job, I posted it here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread47731.html

Thanks. It also got posted in the Rat Bike / Beater thread, so I must be doing something kind of right.

  • Swapped the brake levers this morning. Stopping power has increased drastically. Feels even nicer to ride.

  • So I put some Time ATAC's on it for commuting. I rode it three times with platform pedals and it felt really strange. It's was fine to ride to the pub on them, but not commuting. I'm on the lookout for some cheap Time Allroad Gripper pedals so I can have the best of both worlds.

I also had to reinforce the rack with a diagonal cross bar because my bag would squeeze through the rails and rub on the front tyre.

  • How about atac Z?
