to be fair i have a bit of gap even on my IHS

Swedee's old Mielec coming along. Got some Columbus tusk forks on there but the top of the fork is rubbing with the head tube. A spacer or two underneath the headset bit that makes contact with the bearings should stop this right?

what?!
-
• #3081
Dunno the name for it. The bit that goes on the bottom of the fork, under the HT. my theory is tiny spacers ( like washers or whatever) would raise the HT from the fork a little.
-
• #3082
you mean crown race, the bit that is supposed to sit tight on the forks?
how is the headtube rubbing on the forks, can you elaborate? -
• #3083
The black bit: I might not have the headset on properly. The HT rubs on the circular metal bit.
-
• #3084
seems like the crown race is either too small, your bearings are wrong
-
• #3085
is the headset complete and original, if yes, what are specs on it?
the headtubes were made for 45/45 integrated -
• #3086
I bought it off swedee who was running alpina forks which were absolutely fine.
It's an alpina headset, no idea of specs tbh -
• #3087
this is where my knowledge ends I am afraid, hopefully somebody else will be able to pick it up from here :s... sorry!
-
• #3088
maybe the race is not flush on?
-
• #3089
The race the black bit?
-
• #3090
yeah, thats the crown race that is supposed to be dead straight on the steerer. and obviously tight.
-
• #3091
Ok, thanks for your help. When I tighten the top cap, the HT is pressing so hard onto the forks that you can't turn them. And when there's the stems in but not the top cap, there's a bit of play at the bottom. Might just take it to the LBS, it's starting to piss me off.
-
• #3092
You DO have a lower bearing on there too, right!?
-
• #3093
Haha yeah, not quite that stupid!
-
• #3094
The black bit: I might not have the headset on properly. The HT rubs on the circular metal bit.
bearing race looks like it needs seating properly. Bit wonky at the moment
-
• #3095
It's really loose... You can slide it on and off really easily. Should that happen?
-
• #3096
And yeah, this^ doesn't look flush.

Spatr is the only nun puncher who doesn't have a NLTCBMBC sticker I think.
therefore he is also the only nun puncher
-
• #3098
I think the problem is the diameter of the circular metal bit on the forks is too small, so the HT moves down over it and rubs. So i think a couple of washers underneath the crown race should raise the HT a tad from the forks. That's the plan anyway
-
• #3099
Tmag, the crown race should be flat on the forks no exceptions.
dont space things out, try to mount the crown race on so it doesnt move. -
• #3100
Tried it flat, and without the top cap its fine. As soon as I tighten the top cap it starts rubbing. It's the inside of the head tube against the outside of the fork crown that's rubbing. Also checked that the crown race sits flush on the bearings and it does. Thanks for all the help, but this shits frustrating me... To the LBH I go!
Cheers dude. I didn't get my sparkles though, and that makes me a sad panda.
Fucking unseeable gap
