  • lots of skinned knuckles in here:

  • The other side had some squared edges so I can get a wrench on that but this side is what confused me....really didn't want to have to by a new tool that I'd never use again.....:-(

  • you'll have to use it again when you put a new one in

Welcome to the world of restoring classic lightweights...

  • If you're loathed to buy a new tool here's a couple of thoughts - I'm not advocating them - it's up to you.... (but I've been successful with both in the past but they are risky and painful) - if you've reasonable craft skills and really don't want to buy a tool, they might be worth considering......

    1) Hammer & punch
The photo above suggests someone's had a go at this cup with a centre punch anyway - so you've nothing to loose. you basically need to rotate the cup by locating the punch in the hole at an angle so that hitting it drives it CCW as well as in - too much of an angle and the punch flies out (ouch) not enough angle and there'll be no CCW cup rotation.

    2) Angle grinder & Chisel (brutal)
Use a wrench to remove the fixed cup from the other side and take the axle out.
Use an angle grinder to cut a slot in the protruding cup (careful not to cut into the BB shell) . Now you can use a nice big cold chisel as a screwdriver by clamping it in a vice and rotating the frame. (or just spin it out with a chisel instead of the centre-punch)

    ha !

won't one of these work for the BB ?

  • Or one of these:

  • ^ more meaty

    ha !

actually probably not, didn't notice but the holes are fubard

maybe enough of the cup sticking out to grip with mole grips and twist. Otherwise, drill more holes in the cup and use above tool or similar, or if cup is seized take to bike shop

  • I'll order one of those tools and try...got to be less painful...if it doesn't work I'll take it to a bike shop.

Other thing that's crept up...I thought the bike was dark green after the very quick clean it had earlier it's actually black! No I don't want a black bike so does anyone have suggestions on what colours might suit a vintage rebuild?

I got a quote back from Bob Jackson to paint the frame...

    Single Color Enamel £90.00
    Colored head tube £19.00
    Multipanel Seat tube £35.00
    Lugs Lined £25.00
Transfers and fitting £60.00 This price is a guess and includes the World Champ bands on Seat Tube Panels, Period 531's, Custom trans ( Which Will be vinyl ) and Viking Trans

So approx £229.00 plus return P/P if required.

Not sure I can go that high for this build so might look at getting the local place to sand/respray I'll do the decals and highlight the lugs then get them to apply the clear coats...think that will be about £120 inc the decals...[FONT=Arial][SIZE=2]

  • If you have a couple of hole punches that are a good fit for the holes in the cup you can try wedging them in and then putting a chunky screwdriver diagonally between and twisting CCW. Provided the punches dont slip you should get enough leverage to get the cup moving.

  • ^ sounds like a good scheme - if you have a decent bench vice you could clamp the 2 punches in the vice and rotate the frame.
The only trouble in this case is that you'd need 2 decent holes diagonally opposed - the photo above suggests that the 2 holes on one side are damaged.

  • Just one is a little damaged...there is a bolt underneath the frame that looks like it goes into the BB...guess this needs to come out as well? Never seen that before!

  • Mario Vaz will do the full paint with correct decals supplied by him for under £100
It's not the quality of bob jackson or argos etc but certainly good enough for this bike.

Lots of the classic lightweights readers bikes have been done by him, many top end classics, as have one or two of mine. No complaints

  • Mario Vaz have a website?

  • not AFAIK but examples of his work are on here

  • this has worked for me several times, patience and soaking in pen-oil. from the legend that is Sheldon Brown
