• Would it be a bad idea to integrate a "proper" classifieds section instead of having it in threads etc?

  • Would it be a bad idea to integrate a "proper" classifieds section instead of having it in threads etc?

    That's Microcosm.

Not a bad idea, just that vBulletin has no good solution for it, would require a substantial amount of hacking and then would be difficult to maintain.

What is being proposed here is basically a stop gap to help us get through the next year or so.

  • Bike Radar have just split Road Bikes into whole bikes and parts - after 2 weeks of the new system I can't say I'm a fan. I like having everything in one place, but proper headings would help massively to sell your goods, makes sense.

so what you are saying is lfgss is fast becoming the new bike radar

  • If ghat is the case you could do four.
    Frames and forks.
    Wheels and drive train.
Seats and bars (this would include stems and headsets)
    And components.
    Just a
    thought?

  • Definitely !!!! Especially as a newcomer to the forums. This would really really help !!

  • It's a mess, but it's our mess.

But I would vote 'yes' for public hangings for those who remove the prices when their items have sold.
    this!

Going back to the topic I like it as it is, I like rummaging around - the whole thing is like a giant jumble sale or 2nd hand shop and you never know what gems there might be. If people are getting bumped off page 1 then do a price drop for a bump.

If are after complete bikes then it slightly spoils the fun of learning about bikes and building up from scratch and ordering multiple parts cos you didn't know that seatposts came in different sizes and the difference between english/italian threaded

My shed would be much tidier but my spare part box would be much emptier as would my understanding.

This isn't ebay/CycleSurgery/Evans so if people want something they have to put the time and effort in to find it.

    I vote leave as is

  • A complete bike category pls. All bicycles included but all bike must be capable of bein ridden home safely, would be how I'd have / like it.

  • ^ I agree with that.
A section for complete bikes might be useful (as long as size is a mandatory search criteria), but in general the jumble sale lucky-dip vibe works well enough for me. If you're searching for something specific, and really can't be arsed with trawling through a load of other junk, then you can always start a "wanted" thread.

  • And, yes; keep the prices up after it's sold!

  • And, yes; keep the prices up after it's sold!

This. I don't use classifieds much but not being able to see what stuff has gone for, what the market value is (or, more pertinently, the forum value) can be frustrating.

  • I vote leave it as is.

As has been said above in various ways I like that the unregimented nature of the classifieds seems to produce a more honest way of making transactions based on sellers reputation and the quality of their thread (which I've found often reflects the service you get in terms of postage and delivery time). Also, each person is able to sell their 'type' of item without direct comparison to the next. After a while you get to know who sells vintage parts of low value and who sells nearly new expensive wheelsets etc. so can search for threads started by that person. It feels a bit like an online cycle jumble and you have to wander round the tables and seek out what you want/like. If you classify the classifieds a lot of the community atmosphere will be lost i reckon and it might even cause the sellers to get less for their items as they will be in closer competition with the next seller based mainly on price

  • Velocio, could we have it split into subcomponents, with the option to "view all" for people who wish to view everything in one place?

Best of both worlds, like a ladyboy

  • Think Velocio already said that was the intention - there's a "display all" link in the top navigation bar that does and always will show everything on one page! The "we want it to be like a jumble sale D:" thing is a total non-issue because of that :/

Agree. This would be the best of both worlds.

  • ^ this seams to be the way forward, keeps everyone happy and gets my vote.

  • I've been looking for a full bike for aaages, and it is very frustrating trawling through everything. Saying that though, every time I do go to buy one someone always seems to have pipped me to it. Yesterday I got my dibs and PM in two hours after the post went up, but apparently someone had already beat me to it via PM only...

I'm just getting the hang of it, if we introduce sub categories making it easier for everyone i'll never get my bike!

I can't make these decisions, they're just too big for me. It would make the site more user friendly. It would shift the focus of the forum to trading though - good for the casual user and the site, but less personal for the 'on heres' though.

  • All the car forums I go on have this. When I became a member on this site and was looking for a complete bike, I had to troll through all the bike parts to find them and couldn't beleive that it wasnt sub categorised like other forums I use! Defo do it, its way better to find things.

  • The result is now unlikely to change.

~75% wants to split the classifieds into sub-forums
    ~25% do not want

I'm going to implement this for a trial period of 2 months with the outcome of the trial period to be assessed in the first week of November if it doesn't happen sooner.

    Implementation will be:
    1) Create two new sub-fora: "Whole bikes & Frames", "Components, Clothing & Miscellany".
    2) Prevent new threads being created in the top-level classifieds forum.
    3) Create a page asking what type of advert is being created, and then re-direct to the appropriate sub-fora "Create Thread" page.
    4) Update navigation to include links to the sub-fora and "Post new advert" page
    5) Move most recent threads from the last 10 pages of classifieds into the new sub-fora so that it doesn't start empty.

I'll try and do this today.
