Weight weenie bike on a budget, this should be interesting

  • I promise you that dropping 5 to 10GI will mask climbing hills far easier than dropping 2kg!

  • It's all about the looks. Why would I care about dekagrams if I weigh 86 kgs?

  • Although if you wanna drop it you should drop the wheels, rotating mass innit.

  • From an acceleration point of view rotating mass is important. From a climbing point of view, unless you are a "pure" climber like Pantani there is no difference between 'rotational' and 'real' weight. Your 1500g wheel will feel like 1500g at a constant climbing speed.

  • Says the person who's had to make his weenie bike heavier because parts have failed or failed to perform.

If it's a weenie bike then name one weenie component on it.

I have replaced three parts, in two cases due to poor engineering and in the third due to a bike shop breaking the bottle cage in question.

  • Drillium did when people realised stiffness was more important than the weight saved. 6.8 lower limit still means weight weenies have to stick to non-UCI domestic racing, sportives, CTT TTs.

My opinion differs .. Drillium faded as manufacturing technology improved and component stw ratio improved. Also remember some of the main movers in drillium where racers .. Eddie and the Colnago hour bike being one of the more famous

Everything rotates around my arse. Gravity pull.
Although I shed 10 kgs last year, still use 48 spokes for kerb drops.

Pantani? I fucking cycle to the pub on the other end of town and back.
    Strava racers >>>>>>>>>

  • Alcohol is a diuretic. Urinating sheds weight. Cycle to the pub and back FTW.

  • Therefore, the more alcohol you drink the lighter you will get. I shall test this theory extensively this evening.......

Light bikes with parts that actually work and don't collapse are the Holy Grail of cycling. The sad fact is that by the time you can afford them, you're too old to ride them (I speak from experience). Ultralight bikes can usually be spotted at a distance by looking at the fat bloke on top of them.

Weight loss has significant advantages if stiffness can be maintained. Making the rider somewhat less wobbly costs nothing, riding the bike a lot more, ditto!

  • I don't get this whole argument on "is it worth it", we all spend a lot of money on bikes and very few of us actually can actually warrant spending that much, be it di2 or bling thomson bits and pieces, if the guy wants to spend his money with a weight focus in mind, let him, give him ideas and reccomendations and stop arguing about a subject that has already been gone over countless times.

  • ^Fair(ish) comment, how about the pass-the-parcel approach, one light cheapie each? Exustar EPS pedals, 250g, £25.

  • sounds like a good idea, pro plt handlebars, 260g, can be had for £26 if you look about and are patient

  • I have replaced three parts

    Exactly.

It's not an argument. It's not worth it. End of.
6.8kg limit for people it would actually matter to sees to that.

    PCs are better than Macs....

  • It's your prejudice writ large because you don't give a shit about the engineering of bikes.

  • Maybe you should go to the pub less often and get a propa job so you can afford some decent parts.....Track bikes are cheap anyway.....even a super nice/light bike is still cheaper than a kind of ok car.....

Wearing hip Hop xl clothes or sexy bike gear will make more of aero difference than anything on your bike.....and fuck no there are no benefits ridin around 15 km/h :D ...plus its super shitty when it windy.....

  • PCs are better than Macs....

    Your mum is fat.

  • Maybe you should go to the pub less often and get a propa job so you can afford some decent parts.....

Not sure what you mean by decent part, sure the £40 cassette I have is very light but tthey don't last as long as the cheaper cassette that's heavier and less damaging on the body (fused rather than in pieces).

  • Never flushed down any cassette pieces down my body, so can't really comment.

Except that everyone knows that is bullshit and you are the one with the bike that had to get fatter just to work properly. Why else would I test so many tyres, aero test my TT bikes, buy equipment based on sound principles like cost/benefit and durability rather than "ooh this seatpost is 30g lighter than that seatpost so it must be better".

There will always be people with more money than sense but there is still a limit to how few atoms you can pile up before it's no longer a bike.

  • Pistols at dawn? Handbags at 3 paces? Gorillas in the mist?

    Fight! Fight! Fight!

  • Did you allready make a decision about what wheels you are gonna buy? And vigo or look?

No, you have no grasp of how elegance relates to design principles.

You've said many many times that you don't care for weight- and that is fine, it's your prerogative- but you need to accept that this is your own prejudice- not a universal truth.

If there is a choice between two items that work identically but one is lighter than the other then that to me is preferable as it is more elegantly designed.

  • Some like it NJS only.
