  • Don't ask mdcc, he hates wishbones.

    If I hated wishbones, I wouldn't have a Look 585. and an On-One Pompetamins

  • The down tube is squashed into an oval shape at each end. The term biaxial comes from the fact that each end is squashed at a right angle to the other. The BB end is squashed into an oval with line of max diameter in line with the BB shell. The headtube end is squashed into an oval with line of max diameter in line with the headtube shell. It allows your downtube to be fatter than the headtube and BB, yet still be wielded to these without wrapping.

Ah I get you. Yeah, I will enquire about this. I was going to ask if i could get a slightly oval profile for the downtube, but biaxial makes sense.

I'm waiting on Triton to get started on a fatframe for me. Once you start involving yourself in the details of these things it can get crazy complex. I've calaculated where best to place the rack mounts to be able to fit a rack over the fat tyres, where I'd like my brake hoses tied for best routing, what headtube angle works best for both sus and rigid fork, how I'm going to get my chain past the massive rear tyre................gets headache

I know what you mean haha. Having this much control over the design of a frame is kind of scary, as I am fully aware of how wrong I could get things. But I'm hopeful that the combined wisdom of lfgss will point things in the right direction.

  • Can you get integrated Ti seatposts?

    Yes. Like this;

I think he will do it yeah. But I prefer the traditional setup with 27.2 post. More versatile and lets me pack it into a bike box if travelling with it.

Take off the saddle, remove the chainset and a frame with an integrated seatpost will fit in most bike boxes in my experience.

  • this is what I have fitted to my Van Nick

Columbus Minimal road forks with Cane Creek 100 series HS , Van Nick Ti seat post

I have a spare Ti Stem and Ti zero set back seat post going if you are interested

  • I have a Custom Ti road frame plan on file. This had the seat tube extending such that I can chuck a Tune Cappy on the top. IIRC I was looking at a 34.9mm external diameter. This plan falls down if you want butting in the tube, unless you have it custom butted. Because you'd want thicker diameter walls at the TT/ST cluster, and at the clamping zone. If I like my fat frame, and dont mind plain guage Ti, I may approach Triton with it one day. I may make tweek it from racer towards audax though (getting old, feeling the scoble setting in).

andyp. Pretty sure my plan has a pic of your bike in it, as its a large part of the inspiration. So nice.

My mistake, I shouldn't have put words in your mouth. I thought I could remember you describing them as NAHBS wankery, I think regarding that Cyclops. Maybe you just meant that bike or maybe I'm wrong entirely.

  • The all Ti bike gets a bit expensive. Don't ask me how I know......

For what it's worth I've got a Van Nicholas stem on my Ti Salsa and find it (and the bars but they're flat so no use to you) superlative. I didn't take to the Van Nic post and have seen some photos on line of weld failures (how prevalent/true I don't know) so I went USE for my seatpost which is good.

Other Ti components apart from inumerable bolts and fasteners are a pair of Kingcage ti bottle cages.

For that really special frame I really would be tempted to have a drilled rear brake bridge and also a mech hanger/detachable drop outs.

  • ^ re hanger. Isn't there a ss mtb frame that has a dropout-chain-tug-thingy so you can use a RD?

Interesting idea, I'm not sure what the possibilities for this are. Although I cant really see a situation where I would want to ride it fixed. I'd probably just get another bike

Would be interested to see this if anyone knows

  • No. It was black and more of a box shape.

    But that looks right.

  • These are available in black

Note that the dérailleur hanger is quite a long way outboard of the usual position, so it may be a stretch for some RDs to traverse the entire cassette.

  • Haha, funny you posted that. I literally just spotted that on crc too.

However I've just realised this is all not much use as the rear spacing will be 120mm anyway.

  • No matter. I have a bike with gears anyway. This will be fixed gear only.

  • Just MHO. But feck all this versatility crap. Make it pure and focused to its primary use.

  • Kaplow! This is the geom we have pretty much settled on. Bit of a track/road hybrid geometry. BB higher than road frames but not as high as some track frames. Seat tube a little bit steeper than most but not by much.

    Wishbone seat stays. Check
Biaxial down tube (Or Biovalised as he calls it). Check
    Round tubes everywhere else
Rear brake is still a maybe

Am now inquiring if he can do track dropouts with those little bolts that stop your wheel slipping forward. But other than that, I think the design is pretty sorted.

74/73 angled geometry looks good. Nice short stays. But nothing too drastic. Looking at it, I'm guessing the wheelbase is quite short too. Should have nippy handling.

I'd be tempted to extend my headtube a touch to reduce spacer use.

    Very nice.

  • Are Ti forks a little flexy?

Just to clarify (before a comment like 'yes they flex' comes along) are they more or noticeably more flexy than carbon or steel forks?

yes, lots of people have negative things to say about ti forks but not many people have ridden them as they aren't very common - i've had 3 pairs all of which weren't right for my needs but i recently acquired another set which i thought i'd give a go because i got a decent price and the crown design is different - seem pretty great so far - will update you after more mileage!

  • That is pretty much the same geom as my Burls track. We had similar requirements.

I love mine. It is my daily bike and makes me smile everytime I ride it.

Mine is made up with mid to cheap range components, bar the crankset and wheels, so I won't bore you with the details.

Thanks. I did think about having the headtube 10mm longer and running just 10mm worth of spacers. But the headtube ended up looking a bit out of proportion and I want a horizontalish top tube. I could shift the top tube up to match the headtube but then the standover height was over 83cm, and my inside leg is 83cm. Little tight for my weener.

I dont think 20mm of spacers will look tooo bad. And I plan on working on my flexibility so might end up dropping the stem a tad.

  • stick up a picture anyhoo! interesting to see one other than bjammins

If you want the ability to drop your stem leave it. I guess you might swap between drops and bulls for example. I was thinking along the lines of a Pergoretti.
