Cupcakes, you could have a play around here:
That's a complete (shifters, both mechs, cassette, chain, brakes and chainset) Force Groupset for £608

• #153
Although looking again some stuff is out of stock.

• #154
Ah, but I've gone and bought it now 'ain't I?
I dig that Force is pretty much as good as Red, but I fancied a bit of bling in cranks and shifters. Also, it's all in stock (allegedly) at Fudges and it's all the right ratios/ crank lengths/ clamp sizes that I need.
Mainly I decided I was through fannying around, since I've been 'buying a new groupset' for several months.

There is a lot to be said for making a decision.
I did have a go, and I couldn't match your price- so good jerb.
-
• #156
Did you remember to ditch the brakeset? (And the 'extra coloured cables and hoods' - why anyone would want those is a mystery to me).
-
• #157
Decision making is easy when you're using Ribble as a benchmark. By the time you spec compact cranks and a clamp-on front mech, you push the price of a Force group over £700. And Ribble aren't exactly mega-expensive.
Anyway, back to Fox's bike. I had a look at the Hed Ardennes and Hope Pro IIIs that he's accquired over the weekend. They're lovely. I really want Hope hubs now.

Dancing James has mine, he's the first person to ride them- I'm looking forward to seeing how they roll when I get my bike back.
-
• #159
you upgraded your whole group to Force/Red - but still have Tektro callipers? You're fucking kidding me?
The best thing about high end groups is the braking - fuck the weight and bling, the two things that improve riding the most are a) braking and b) shifting. You just paid 650 quid and only improved one of those. If you'd bought Force cranks (which by all accounts are pretty good) you probably could have got Force brakes too.
This place is mental sometimes - it's turning into some shit pastiche of Weight Weenies.
-
• #160
Heh. None of that applies if you're upgrading from Sora.
-
• #161
head explodes
Why didn't you just get a complete Rival group? Or Rival/Force mix? You'd have had change from that for that money.
-
• #162
Anyhow, I need the shimano to put on another bike, and that bike needs long drop calipers. It bugs me to buy things I don't need, and my tektros stop my bike just fine.
-
• #163
Godammit Rich, that was the last SRAM Red Black chainset at that price at Fudges and now you've bought it they're out of stock.
Next time I build a bike I'm going to keep the spec secret until it's finished, no starting threads about it so people can buy the cheap bits I wanted :(
-
• #164
You've got a point. I just consider it 'treating myself' though. This is the first time I've ever been able to justify buying new geared parts, though. Seriously, first time ever. I wanted something 'nice'!
-
• #165
Godammit(
Oops. Sorry Fox. Guess you shouldn't have encouraged me to buy it!
-
• #166
Well they were cheap but I want 165mm really anyway. I'd get Force 165mm but they don't exist, which is a bit annoying.

• #167
Dan- all SRAM brakes perform the same, Apex will stop you just as well as Red, they are just heavier.
-
• #168
I think Dan may have a point about the calipers if I'm completely honest. I am looking forward to much improved stopping power over my 7400 DA I have to say.
-
• #169
I honestly have no idea why anyone would plan a build openly on the forum! Too many cooks.. It is fun to watch sometimes though.
Cupcakes - sorry, bit of an overreaction, it's your cash to spend! Just my experience that quality braking is priceless (shifting doesn't radically improve past 2nd tier groupsets ime, but braking does) I am so much faster when I trust my brakes to control my speed, not just stop.
Dammit - i don't think you're right, the new Red have a completely different pivot design no?
-
• #170
2012 Red, yes, single pivot but with a cam type design like Zero Gravity.
-
• #171
I'd get Force, or EE.
-
• #172

this is my point - all brakes will stop you (bar the PX ones, if you are over 70kg) - but being able to modulate braking well is something you only get from higher end callipers
-
• #173
(I don't own any bikes with SRAM)
-
• #174
I've not tried the new Red, but with all the 2011 stuff they all work exactly the same.

• #175
Anyway, bedtime for me

Just in case anybody wanted bits of sram :)
