It is very tempting. I usually prefer to build a frame up myself, but I can't see anything on there that I'd be in a hurry to swap out. Just keep telling myself that I'd like my next road bike to have discs!
And just to rub it in, it's available in a giant sized 3XL :-(

I think disc brakes will be another couple of years
-
• #104
^Well that might help postpone my long stay in the Debtors' prison ;-) Perhaps I'll treat myself for my 40th?
I guess it's only because the UCI ( relatively ) recently allowed disc equipped crossers that the mainstream manufactures are catching on. There are some nice disc options at the moment. Many of them seem a bit portly though. Although I can't imagine your new Lynskey being more than about 9kg.
I just keep telling myself that the Canyon will be one step further towards becoming a fully fledged MAMIL!

What I should do is to (finally) replace the duff rear wheel on my (disc equipped) cross bike, that's basically all it needs (apart from maybe a power meter) and it'd be the perfect winter trainer- which is what I actually need.
Other than that I need a TT bike (minus wheels) for next years true assault on the role of MAMIL- Triathlon.
But I keep getting distracted by shiny new things.

Neil
Get the winter commuter sorted. Then start your WW TT bike, am sure you will have it done before chainbreaker anyway.
-
• #107
I'm not allowing myself to get a TT bike before I can get into the 24 minute range for a 10 mile test round Herne Hill.
I guess what I'm lacking right now is a project bike- I just love assembling the components, putting it together, refining etc.
I keep being tempted by Ultegra Di2 for the cross bike- but it'd be, functionally, a big step backwards for winter due to the difficulty of discerning which shift button you are hitting through thick gloves.

Make your CX bike heavier, try and match the weight to be exactly twice as much as the Cannondale.
-
• #109
It's pretty much there already

^^^^^I do quite like the idea of training with power. I bought one of these when the endless rain began.
Just used it with a heart rate monitor so far, but there is this for about £45.

It is good.
I'm getting rid of my turbo in order to make myself go down the gym to train (they have watt bikes there), in order to also verk ze guns as they say.
But I've been abusing my road bike in the turbo for a year or so as it has a power meter.
In many ways it would make a lot more sense to have the power meter on the training bike.

What's wrong with the wheel on the Boardman?
-
• #113
Two thousand miles proved to be ~1,500 too many for the bearings in the hub.
Every time I get on it I think "hmm, that really IS fucked", then look at the cost of a Hope Pro II to Mavic TN 719 and "fail to execute".
To be honest other than the shifters and rear mech that rear wheel is the only original component left on the bike, I've changed everything else.

Here's the evenings challenge- find me that rear wheel for less than £200 and I'll buy it this evening.
Or a better wheelset.

Do you build your own wheels?

No, I should learn- it might play well to my slightly OCD nature.
But for the meanwhile I could do with someone else assembling it.
Preferably into a wheel that won't do this when I run out of talent:

Ouch! Merlin cycles would have been a good bet, but for some reason they haven't started building 29er wheels yet :-s
-
• #118
If you go to "Custom wheels, disc" they do list it, £210ish plus delivery.
So, close.

£185 from Wicked Cycles: http://www.wickedcycles.co.uk/index.asp?function=CART&ECD=4568&productid=3033
Can anyone do better than that?

130 or 135?

135

poor reputation thought, but given Evans sell them as well, price match?
-
• #123
£185 sounds like a bargain to me. Hope hubs really are great things!
-
• #124
My old Hope XC's have lasted me around 10 years & about 4 different wheel builds.
-
• #125
Yeah, I'm sold on the quality, just being cheap really.
I keep going to look at that Canyon Ultimate AL Di2, £1,660 at the moment.
