• ^^Did you get shot in the leg?

  • This is one of the reasons i never wear white socks..

  • ^ South London, no more needs to be said.

You live in South London, James.

  • You live in South London, James.
No more needs to be said. :)

  • I cycle home from the Velodrome without lights or breaks on the wrong side of the road every monday.

Not sure what Dimi is complaining about...
This South London, no more needs to be said.

Hope everyone is healing up nicely.

What are some of the others?

  • ^^Did you get shot in the leg?

It's pretty wild out in the west (country). I touched a pedal down, shortly followed by leg/shoulder/hand/pride.

This is one of the reasons i never wear white socks..

Only overly emotional teen cyclists wear black socks in summer.

  • :(

  • My girlfriend had a driver pull out of a side road on her today, when she had clear right of way.

Front end collision seems to have written of the frame and forks. Lots of witnesses etc and dealing with the LCC lawyers, but I thought I'd ask some advice here on where to get the bike officially checked over?

    here's some of the damage

  • Hope she's okay!

I don't know where you're based but if it's not too much of a faff you could take it back to Pearsons in Sutton?
Get them to give you a cost plus rebuild estimate?

    Just an idea.

  • She ok?

Frame and fork looks like a write off to me I'm afraid. Fork is clearly bent and also the deformation in the top and downtube doesn't bode well. Is it alu?

  • Get talbot to quote for a steel repair 'new frame is the only way to go sorry'

  • Talbot Matt is indeed a good bet. You'd hope any wrench would write that off without batting an eyelid though.

Sad end for a nice frame. Hope the GF is OK. Enjoy the paperwork :(

  • Thanks for the replies guys, she's absolutely fine apart from a swollen finger that we need to get checked out. Fortunately it was the bike rather than her that took the brunt of the impact!

It's a steel frame Hovis, and yeah I can't see any way the frame will be considered officially safe to ride.

Pearson does sound like a good shout, despite the hassle of getting there. Especially if any replacement parts will come from them.

Cheers Howard, we've never gone through this process before. I know you've had your fair share as well :/

  • Strangely enough she boought this bike off the bike fitter at Pearson who was selling it via gumtree, we have his card somewhere.

  • Glad she's OK, Jordan, shame about the bike.

Yes, I'd say have it certified by Pearson's, too. Normally, any respectable bike shop would do, but you might as well get it from the horse's mouth.

  • I wouldn't bother. Why? Means shlepping over to Pearsons. If you are in West London it might make sense, but if not, it's a mission, and when you get costs from the driver to sort the mess out, they aren't going to pay for your time you wasted dealing with it. It's is rubbish, but it's the way it works.

Take it to your nearest reputable LBS and state very clearly that you would like them to safety check the bike and prepare a list of damages and repair costs. Get them to agree on the spot that the frame / fork are beyond economical repair and ask them to quote for like for like replacement. It's likely the front wheel is toast too, maybe the headset as well. Tell them you are happy to pay them a fee for the service - the driver's insurance will pay for that, too.

If Pearsons is your LBS then ignore the top bit, and, bonus :)

  • I had a very similar situation in October. Took it to a local framebuilder in Camberwell for a repair quote (which came in as expectedly uneconomical) then later to my LBS for a 'second-hand value' quote, which the solicitor told me is all they're legally obliged to pay.

Have yet to see how much I get for it. Might make a difference that they don't make my old bike any more.

  • Curious. Which solicitor?

I received the full value for all damaged and carbon parts in RTC #1. I expect the same for RTC#2. I would be furious to put it mildly if they tried to weasel out of paying the full wack to put things right.

  • Leigh Day. I'm sure they're doing their best for me, but they wanted me to know what the law was, so required the second-hand price thing.

If the offer comes in lower than I expect I'll definitely be asking for a second opinion of my legal pals.

  • Beware - lots of diesel on Euston Rd up at the top of Gower St this morning. I hit the raised red line markings and instantly washed out. I'm okay, cuts and scrapes only. Hello Monday.

  • An Asian guy knocked off a moped in the middle of norbury opposite the Dallas Chicken. Was about 11:35 when I passed, ambulance arrived and he was on his back helmet off just looking at the sky. Even if he is alright the image is going to stay with me a while.

  • Knocked off last week at Elephant and Castle, police attended and all was resolved fairly amicably. Thankfully damage to the bike is pretty minimal, I've got a quote from Balfe's for the repairs; think my pannier's done for as well. Haven't spoken to the driver but he left me a voicemail advising that he's reported it to his insurer and they are going to be in touch - he seems to be trying to do the right thing.

Tried calling the driver's insurer and they just have a recorded message advising third party claimants to email them. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good Letter of Claim to send to them? I've got an estimate for the bike repair, but what should I do about the pannier - just a link to a comparable replacement?

  • Was this on the Walwoth road just before E&C?
