  • so if enough of us say bin it, will the democratic process win?

As in most democracies, not many people actually have a say most of the time. You'll notice above I had anticipated this response, hence "I'll be putting the **best **suggestions into practice."

I won't be binning the bike, otherwise I'll have to join the London Strong Legs and Walking Boots forum instead.

    1. Change that massive brick of a stem and sort the stem spacers out
    2. Find a saddle that actually matches the colour scheme (black/orange Charge - ordered)
    3. Paint the rear rim black
    4. Take that God-awful crank off, soak it in Nitro-Mors, then spray it any other colour
    5. let Gaston and scoble be the final arbiters of the build
    6. get those 'maurice' stickers off
    7. Any road-style cheap black stem
    8. Colour ALL the orange bits black (except maybe the headset)
    9. chuck some compact drops (eg Bontrager SSC - VRC) and road brake levers on it
    10. mudguards?
    11. put a bottle cage on it
    12. get it in the bin (this is the last resort)

Thanks to lemonade for all the ideas.
The maurice 'sticker' is actually laquer, does it need Nitro-Mors on that as well?

  • Hang on a minute, I have had a Maurice recently and I loved it. Everybody I know asked me about my gay bike when I turned up on it. Admittedly mine was white and purple with yellow spokes, chain and grips.

Don't knock it - I think they are good bikes in an ironic and shit way - you really don't need to change anything apart from the saddle.

    Just learn to love it.

    Charlie

  • Just learn to love it.

    Then bin it.

    Tough love.

Alternatively, do like scobler and Nitromors the whole fucking things.

exactly some people have to spend an awful lot of money to achieve that level of anti-porn.

cheap shit looking bikes have their place. my two se draft lites served me well last year and cost me fuck all in their original forms.

  • I have to chip in with some maurice love...

Heavy wheels, stupid colours, and brakes that dont work until they strip the paint off, but its still a great value for money otp.

    the frame is indestructible too.

    bin it.

  • So this is more of a "public consultation" really. What the council do before going ahead and bulldozing the library anyway. ;)

My tuppenceworth - orange is a very Marmite colour (except Marmite is dark brown). It either works (trim on a black saddle = good) or looks hideous (wheel rim / cranks = bad). Get that sorted and you're nearly there! I'd go compact drops as well.

  • I would paint the rim, i painted both of mine and it turned out great, have a look at my thread if you want to see. Also i would raw the cranks, then polish them up, an effort but worth it. lastly, if you don't like the big sticker, you could paint over it, rub it down so you have something for the paint to stick to, and paint over.

  • or do what i did with my bright pink se and just wrap it in duct tape*

  • Nitromorz the everythingz

  • NitroMOARz ?

This is getting out of hand.

    Precisely.

  • +1 cover it in tape.

But in a more flamboyant way than HatBeard's example.

    Also glitter, lots of glitter.

yeah with all the changes above do you actually have a mongoose maurice any more ?
i think you might have triggers broom

  • Black tape over Maurice logo. Rebuild back wheel with silver spokes and a black rim or just sell wheel to polo player and buy a new one. Invest remaining money in lotto tickets in hope of winning enough to build the bike you really want.

  • triggers broom

Is this a dumbed-down version of Theseus' ship?

  • Theseus' ship

Is this the public school version of the "grandfather's axe" story?

  • I think it looks alright. Bit too much cOlour coordination tho.

    1. Are you ever going to run it SS?

If not replace the rear wheel with a Velocity blunt on a shimano MTB disc hub conversion. (black rim, silver spokes, silver hub). If you are (rather than might possibly one day) build a new silver rear with a dyad and doubl sided on-one track hub.

    1. Do you like the cockpit? Are you going to keep the risers etc?

If so just get a more attractive MTB stem with rise and loose a few spacers and trim. If not what would you prefer ? I'd be tempted by risers with more of a back sweep (silver), and loose the flanges from the grips.

    1. Strip cranks back to silver and leave silver. (they'll fit nicely with the silver hubs and spokes on your new rear.

    2. Saddle youve felt with.

  • make sure you buy a stem that is the correct clamp diameter for your bars next time.

  • BBQ paint not on the list. Disappointed.

Your bike will be able to withstand temperatures of up to 300 degrees - if there is a volcanic eruption, you can laugh at everyone else's shitty charred bikes, right in their stupid faces

  • make sure you buy a stem that is the correct clamp diameter for your bars next time.

Yeah, might do. Will see how I feel at the time.

  • has this been r̶e̶s̶o̶l̶v̶e̶d̶ binned yet?

  • needs to go in the recycling bin

    1. Are you ever going to run it SS?

I'd like to keep the option, and I don't want to spend too much money on the bike because it'll hold back the build I really want to do on a new frame.

    1. Do you like the cockpit? Are you going to keep the risers etc?

I do quite like the risers, actually, for every day riding. A nicer mtb stem is a good call, yes.

    1. Strip cranks back to silver and leave silver. (they'll fit nicely with the silver hubs and spokes on your new rear.

Definitely beginning to agree with this; I'll try it and if I don't like it I'll paint them over.

Thanks for the good ideas. I'll update the list.
