hah, yup hence the sensible..like a pair of aksiums, dead weight but probably quite dependable. Truth of the matter is in the past few years ive gone there i've had less issues with my cheap novatec hubs & chinese rims than others were having with their pretty expensive gear (reynolds aero something or other melting brake surface, shamals with broken spokes on a morning ride before the flight home is always fun, and that guy that took worn out hyperons etc). Its supposed to be training so i dont take the best bike. I wish i were as rich as some of my other club members that seemed to think nothing of riding their Zipps and Bora Ultras through muddy crap the last few days. Ive been notching up the same ride distances on a 15Kg steel bike with 105-1055/ma3/mudguards/lights/tool bag and hopefully it'll pay off when the time comes for racing.

They're better wheels than people expected, cheap, solid and reliable, can't see why they'd inhibit people's performance.

Further to my steerer tube malaise, the 2 Cannondale dealers I called would like to sell me some Enve 2.0 forks. Does anyone have a pointer to getting some standard 1 1/4 - 1 1/8 tapered steerer forks which I think are still standard for Caad12 and Supersix for a reasonable cost? Not too bothered about them being 290g.

Right, can anyone here narrow down the possible culprit for my current creaking problems on my CAAD12?

It happens when I’m putting in a decent amount of power through the pedals in pretty much any gear. If I change gears and continue my pedal stroke the creak seems louder. If I coast for a bit and then put the power back down then there is no noise for a while, but it can creep back in after a while. If I’m soft pedalling then there is no noise.

I’ve got the feeling it could be chainring bolts, spikes on the rear wheel or bottom bracket load, but before I start fiddling with anything, is there any other bits it could be?

I’ve eliminated headset, stem/bars, seatpost and qr skewers after adjustments to them and I’ve regreased the chainset in the last week or so.

Strip the bike down to bare frame and rebuild it, it's the only way (and the creak will probably still be there)

I had an infernal creaking/squeaking, and it actually was the pedal threads and also the cleats. (Speedplay)

Usually a chainring bolts. Check if you have tighten them up then go to the BB.

Unlikely, but always worth checking QR skewers are seated correctly

@B0N0R that is my last option. I stripped it down recently when I realised I’d got the wrong spider for the cranks (Rival and Force use slightly different spiders).

@HoKe yeah, they’re tight but maybe I needed to torque them better when I changed my chainring.

@branwen I had this problem a couple of weeks ago so I stopped mid ride today to adjust them. Didn’t stop anything though.

Have the modular crankset? The lock ring might be lose or loctite blue was omitted.

Yeah I’ve got a Force modular crankset running 1x.

I’ve just undone, regreased and retightened the chainring, spindle, pedal and QR threads.

Fingers crossed for silence tomorrow morning. 🤞

Yeah maybe check the torx bolts on the force spider and loctite the bolts & spider / crank interface

Think I've solved the excessive creaking. The commute this morning was silent and care free. For futture reference, I reckon it was probably the chainring bolts as I'd swapped the chainring but neglected to retreat the threads when installing the new one. Thanks for all the suggestions.
