  • My Disc commuter is here now:

Works nicely - Hope 29er wheels are excellent - discs are a revelation on a road bike.

Hoping to be tubeless on fatter rubber by the weekend - the shop screwed up their stock and sold the Hutchinsons that were originally specced.

There was one like that at the flask on Tuesday, only wetter. Good luck with the tubeless, I gave up after a few weeks of trying to get it to work on 32mm 'cross tyres.

  • so the hope bits arrived

29er crest on Pro Evo hubs
    V twin brakes
    Floating rotors (160 fr, 140 r)
    Headset
    Ceramic BB

Also dug out the spare front mech I had, it is the correct size for the frame 34.9, top pull band on DA 7800.

    Parts remaining to be acquired

Bars Deda RHM 02 or 3t Ergonova
Stem ideally a thomson to match everything else (quite happy to source 2ndhand)
    Bar tape (lizard skins)
    Rear mech probably Ultegra
Cable guides to attach the disc brake hoses to the frame (it is made for normal cables, unless I get the braze ons drilled out)
    Spacers
Tyres, trying to decide between Durano tyres in 700x28 or the Marathon Supreme in 700x32 - any others to consider?
Mudguards probably SKS chromoplastics p45 or does anyone have any other mudguard suggestions

  • If you never plan to run cable brakes you can modify the braze-ons yourself.

Drill a small hole at the base of the braze-on, drill out the narrow end, and then saw the top off. You then get a standard hydraulic cable guide, that you can zip tie to.

Panaracer Pasela in 28 or 32 if gumwall is your thing.

  • Bontrager racelite's in 32mm.

  • Bontrager racelite's in 32mm.

but where from. Arent they difficult to find these days?

    If not. Then +1

  • They don't make them any more, so yes. But they're still around. The hen's teeth are the folding ones in 32mm, which only seem to have theoretically existed.

Also (altho I wouldn't colour-match tyres) the grey should work with the Ti frame, and grey of the Ultegra.

    Here* http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/bontrager-race-lite-item116008.html and here: http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Bontrager-Race-Lite-Hardcase-Hybrid-Bike-Tyre_22519.htm?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Product_Search&utm_campaign=Froogle02

I keep meaning to get a set of the 32mm to hold in stock just in case. I'm very happy with my 25mm on the front.

    • (maybe but probably not knowing their loose use of the term "in stock")
  • why the hardcase over the marathon supreme or panaracer?

  • i can recommend the marathon supreme. in 32mm and they are fairly light.
    very good grip too.

  • why the hardcase over the marathon supreme or panaracer?

They are about as light'n'fast as you can get for a 32. Altough the marathons might compete there now that they're supreme.

  • i have read many conflicting reviews for the hardcase (but also many conflicting reviews for the other tyres too)

on cost though, the hardcases appear to win

Tyres is personal. I would'nt take someone else word on what works, try them. They are definitly light, and fast rolling.

  • Pretty much what he said.

I can't speak on the marathons... I'd (probably ignorantly) avoid them soley on other peoples descriptions of "dead and heavy".

The paneracers and the hardcases aren't comparable IME.

The paneracers are a fairly nice alround gumswall that (most importantly) come in a range of widths in 27". IMO theyre nice but the main reasons for chosing them are looks and/or range of sizes.

The hardcases are a fast rolling tough tyre with good grip. They have better puncture protection (I think - because I didn't have puntures with either), but have less flexible sidewalls (which should = a harsher ride).

    FYI:

    • panracer was 28mm F/R on a town bike and R on my beater with a coster brake.
    • hardcase is 25mm F on a fixed beater.

    Hardcase has had more use.

  • 28mm Maxxis Refuse!

  • I'm tossing up between these two bars atm.

FWIW the Ergosum is more akin to the Deda RHM 02

  • Having said that FSA bars are some £15 more dear than the £19.95 for Deda RHM's at Ribble.

  • ^^ less of that filth.

  • oh, I want something more akin to the ergonova or may just have to save some pennies

  • I've a spare pair of the Deda bars if you want to try them.

  • at me or Zed?

  • Have you looked at FSA wing compacts?

I'm not sure if this is for chicks?

  • or should i just get the bars i know i like? but cost twice as much

i am always baffled at people building a new bike who say things like i really like xxxx saddle but thought I would try a different one on the new build. part of me thinks it would be pretty stupid of me to try something different.

i really like the flat top of the ergonova

  • Compared to the above, the Deda bars look more like standard road bars than compacts.

  • OK, but as the DOVmeister put it to me:

"Bars are 3T Ergosum LTD, the Ergonova is the same shape but with flat tops for gays that 'don't kill it in the drops'
