I still have the black leather if anyone wants to give it a go. I looks great but isn't practical if you grip your bars hard, it moves more than tape.

I wrapped mine with cotton tape first and then sewed the leather grips on and there's no movement at all.

or you could wrap the bars in double sided tape first, i did that with my track grips and it worked a treat

Scuse my ignoramousness, what are those shifters please. -

Not sure, but the model is written on the side so I'll have a look next time it's out of the shed. They came as standard on a Raleigh Airlite for around year 2000

Well see how it goes. I used double sided tape. It was ok for maybe 500 miles.

Track grips (Soyo etc) just need some hairspray. Or are these grips leather?

Leather they are not, and hairspray was used, but I tend to grip my bars excessively and wanted to be sure there would be no slippage. I'm sure it would work pretty well in securing leather grips too though, well maybe until the sticky gives up the ghost.

It's more that leather stretches with repetitive twisting over time, and that it's not tape – so hard to get really tight to start with.

Perhaps I'm being an eejit, but is it possible to do the 'harlequin' style thing with padded cork-style tapes? Or is this just for retro flat tapes?
I've been thinking about this. These woven patterns have tape two layers thickness everywhere except for pin-holes of zero layers at the corners. There might be a slight bit more or less overlap as the pattern follows the bend of the bars, but the weaving prevents much deviation from that.
The tapered edges on padded cork tapes would work against you - you'd have full 2-layer thickness in the middle of the diamonds but it would taper down to 1-layer thickness on the edges between diamonds and taper to 0 at the corners.

As for the triple, it looks the same as double except the 2 opposing wraps are started alongside eachother, yellow goes one direction(occurs ever wrap), black and white in the other. start em next to eachother parallel. Then just don't fuck it up halfway round....
I'm pretty sure it's done with 4 tapes - 2 yellow going one way round and black and white going the other. With 3 tapes the weaving wouldn't work out and even if it did the diamonds would be skewed.

Anyone know if there's anywhere I could get some custom printed tape? Just got some of the Cinelli Mike Giant tape n got an idea for something similar I'd like to do.
