  • I am not dissapoint.

They look mint. Did you make the bottle cage?

  • Na, that was given to me by a work mate. It kind of gave me the idea to do the mudguards.

  • They look good, but so out of place on this build :(

    Definately not.

I love this bike. It's a lovely balance of classic style and modern practicality. I would have thought some nice GB ones would have looked better, but these definitely work IMO.

The only thing I'd worry about is that being flat they won't offer much protection. I was riding my kingpin back the other day and realised I'd completely forgotten how awesome propper full mudgaurds are.

How easy would it be to mold edges ontop?

  • I can't even think how that could happen. You could stick beading on the edge underside though to send water along rather than round the edge.

They're not going to work like decent full guards (the front guard does't extend over the wheel for example) but they're pretty trick.

  • They actually work pretty well. I went out last night on the wet roads and they seemed fine. It was a thrill riding so fast in the wet and not getting sprayed in the face or up my arse. Sure the front guard stops just in front of the front brake but that doesn't seem to matter.
The flat profile also works fine, I doubt a bead would make much difference. 35mm guards set about 8mm away from a 19mm wide tyre - doesn't let much escape. I also like that because of the flat profile, from side on they're almost invisible. I'll try to get some decent outside photos today if it stays light by the time I get home.
They're quiet too - no rattles, which matters to me. Hate noisy bikes.

  • I wondered about the rattling. In my head I always imagined cf to absorb vibrations and rattle less.

As for the edges, I don't know how you'd do it on the ones you have now, but would it be possible to use say a 28mm tyre as a mold, then ????, and profit?

Or do you need to be able to exert some form of pressure, either by vacuum or wrapping tightly.

I only have the vaguest understanding of how cf works from random blogs and posts.

  • I wouldn't use a tyre for a mould - doubt it would handle the cure temperatures (135C) and stay in shape. It would need a proper mold (from tooling block or such like), vac bags and 6 bar of pressure to get proper consolidation, yes.
Also the bike is designed to take up to 28mm tyres with 35mm mud guards or 32mm tyres without. This is good as I'm thinking of one day putting some slightly larger tyres on there for a bit more old man comfort.
Like I said, the idea was to make them from a flat panel and flex it into the curve, making the tension hold them firmly in place. They seem quite sturdy while being pretty light. (don't ask me how much they weigh - I didn't weigh them and I don't really care).

  • Few more photos then.

I agree wooden ones would be nice, but I quite enjoyed doing these.

  • Okay, I'm sorry, they look really nice. Although the ones B'jammin posted are nicer I think. Really nice job on those!

  • Thank you!

  • Okay I take it back - look ace!

  • What rack is that if you dont mind me asking?

  • Only one kind; Tubus.

  • Thought as much, bugger. I didn't want to have to spend another 60 quid

  • Still heavier than a rackless system.

His look like the titanium version.

  • Yeah it's a Tubus Fly Classic stainless steel rack with titanium stay arm.

  • they look great (mudguards)

  • Hmm.

Just came back to this thread to ask about wheels and realise none of my photos show up because my flickr account is 'no longer active' WTF? I didn't deactivate it, not been naughty on there or nowt. Anyone any idea what's going on?...(doubt it).

Anyway was going to say I'm looking for a decent wheel set and would like some suggestions please. Something strong, sturdy, long lasting and light that would suit the build. Bit difficult to see the build at the moment though, sorry about that. I'll try to see what's happened there...

  • flickr images do that if you make them private/move/replace them you can just relink them

  • But I haven't. My whole account has been 'deactivated' and all my photos have gone!! When I click 'sign in' the window says I am signed in but then takes me to a page to start a new account. Very weird. Not impressed, especially as I just paid for a 'pro' account. Anyway I'm in contact with them now trying to sort it out.
    Cheers.

  • Could be your pro expired or something?

  • Doubt it, I only upgraded to it last month, for a year. I don't know what's happened but hopefully it will get sorted soon.

  • did you put naughty pictures up?

  • nope

  • Hooray. Pics now work again.

But Yahoo/Flickr really are a bunch of incompetent retards and I'm still not done with them. Took four emails of them asking the same questions and still they try to make me log in with an old email address I told them I don't use anymore and still no explanation as to why my account was deleted... Twats.
