  • Local welder. Weld bar on = bingo.

  • the euro bb is stuck in my (steel) bmx frame. i got the right hand side out fine, the left hand side is stuck.

    1. i am to be turning it right, yes?
    2. i used an adjustable spanner
    3. i put it in a vice and used frame an lever.
    4. the bb cup is now a little mashed
    5. should i swallow my pride and take it to my lbs?

I think you're turning it the wrong way.

  • Remove the non-drive side by turning counter-clockwise.

    oh shit fuck

  • on re-examination of what i did, i am turning the correct way.

  • If its rusted on then I'd probably go with welding on a bar. Unless, Try drilling a hole and then tap it out... could work before you leave the house.

  • Disclaimer: by hole I mean small hole or groove in the rh cup to give you something to tap against

  • i've thought of putting some of that oil that loosens things - brain fail - on it but don't really want to ruin the bearings, but i guess that is better bet to try before anything else?

  • Hello new user trying not to be a noob)

I have a similar problem, ally frame chrome or stainless BB.
A friend told me the 2 may have reacted and chemically soldiered themselves together.

His answer was to use some sort of blow torch or somethings (not to cut it out) but at a distance to heat up the ally and hopefully break the bond.
Havent tried it yet have so far been too affraid until Im at the point now where the bearing hae given up and so has the splined bit of the shaft (wobbly crank arms).

Could someone tell me if there is any truth in what I have been told by my friend.

  • I dont think heat will help, they burn at diff temps.

  • I think that maybe the point, if the ally expands under a lower heat then the expansion of the cup should break the seal.

  • Use AC90

Cuts through rust like a peado through a playground at lunchtime

  • Heat is a last resort but does work. Be careful as you don't want to heat the ally too far, and you will of course fuck the paint job. Try all and every form of penetrating oil first. Also, if possible you could try attaching something (welding?) to the BB and then pop it in a vice and turn the frame.

  • Bwahahaha Paint, what paint the advantage of haveing a Scott YZ15 there is no paint ifs raw ally for the most part.
As for penertrating oil neither side of the BB has come off for me so I doing htink the oil will be able to get inside.

  • A good penetrating oil will get inside, something like Ferrosol, but normal WD40? Probably not

  • And it will disolve whatever chemical bond may have developed?

  • Use AC90

    Thats just wrong!

  • The correct tools and proper application of strength wins the day (a proper socket wrench with an old pair of forks over the end as opposed to an adjustable spanner and a hammer) the BB is out. In removing it I found a fatal floor "for cross country use only, not for Downhill or jumping" (I dont think I could have treated it any worse)

  • There is a tool for removing stiff fixed cups, which would also probably be suitable in this case. It holds onto the flat edges of the cup and a bolt runs through your BB shell and clamps on from the opposite side. You can then turn it with its locked-on grip. Most bike shops should have it.

Careful use of a vice should be adequate though.

If you want to get oil into the edges, heat the area. As it cools it will draw the oil in.

  • yeah give it time

  • steveswangreen = potential twat

  • Just thrown all my toys out the pram. Fucked if I can undo this

    or Fucking this

Have tried boiling water and am using wrench on the bolt side
and the big spanner thing on the other. No budget so lbs is out.
Tried to mtfu or the female equiv and it moved a fraction then stuck again.
    Utter fury and bruised hand.

  • I absolutely hate, hate, hate going to my LBS for repairs but even I had to admit defeat with a BB once. A humiliating experience.

  • Local Metal worker, weld on large bar and twist.

    £10 tops.

  • I don't want to admit defeat, not to mention that I don't have time to take it anywhere, also not to mention that this is my 3rd bike that's supposed to be a cheap as chips beater / intro to polo, and there are lots of extra expenses. Plus the fact that it did actually move a smidge, twice!

Manix is probably right in that I'm using a wrench which I've scuffed up already so it's about using the right tool. Can't fit a socket over the axle though.

Can someone confirm that I'm doing the right thing by trying to move the bolt side clockwise?

    Have woken up still annoyed.

  • Recently had this same problem. Spent literally hours trying every tool in the garage, skinning knuckles and straining muscles. Took it to a local motorbike repairman - put it in the vice, came straight out. Right tools, right job, everytime. Save yourself the bother and take it to someone with a big vice you can borrow...
