  • There's always been software that allows you to define virtual 'screen' zones but Windows (assuming) is actually pretty slick these days at tiling windows to halves/quarters of the screen. And you can then drag the dividing line to make your footy take up e.g 1/3 if the screen

  • Yes and no with 3D, it is a field that I have been trying to do more, but my bread and butter is actually photography and video editing. Anything that lives on a screen really...

It’s funny we are also seeing a lot of dual screens set up at work where the older smaller screens are in portrait mode to match with the newer and larger screens. It makes total sense!

    What 32inch screen you got?

  • Also, that is a very well used MS IntelliMouse Optical. Must be pushing 20 years old?

  • Benq PD3200Q I think. it has a little puck for switching between low blue light, sRGB and some other useless mode, which I don't use at all, but besides that it seems like decent value. I'd say QHD is a good compromise as some programmes don't play well with 4k last time I checked. Ultrawide QHD looks good but maybe less value for pixels/£.

Same issues with photo and 3D if you're producing images, colour accuracy is key, maybe budget in a calibration device like a colormunki of you can.

I also have a 4k Asus at home that I managed to score for pittance on eBay #boastpost

  • I have always had a spyder so that’s taken care of.

I have a 4K screen at work and I don’t really like it that much. It’s one of those LG ones. My eyes get really tired looking at it. It could also be the fact that our office is far too bright.

  • My normal desk's been made unavailable while that floor of that building is refurbished. Found a team with a spare desk I've been using for the last month. Now they've got some new starters and we've swapped rooms. There's been a Lenovo-branded box big enough for a tower sat in the corridor for a week.

Colleague noticed yesterday the box was still sealed, and the shipping label was dated June 2017. My current work PC is a ~2014 Lenovo ThinkStation E31 with a Xeon E3 and 12GB of 1600MHz DDR4. Unpacked a box-fresh ThinkStation P710 with TWO Xeon E5, and 64GB of 2400MHz DDR4. SIXTY-FOUR!!! And an SSD. No idea why the team whose name is sharpied onto the box didn't use it, but this machine isn't listed in ServiceNow, not even in the asset list, even though it does have an asset sticker...

This week's fun project is working out how to get it registered and have the company's normal developer Windows build onto it without anyone deciding I shouldn't have it.

  • In any case, gonna wait till post Christmas sale to hopefully grab a good deal... my new PC will arrive just before Christmas, apparently...

Then I might have to sell my cat...

Definitely have to sell some nice bike parts to pay for these... :-(

  • And apparently BenQ isn't pronounced "Ben Q"...

  • Like GIF is apparently pronounced "jiff"? Pfft...

  • Yes, Task Scheduler. It's surprisingly powerful with a lot of options. I also sometimes use AutoIt depending on what I want the schedule to do (for instance I have a program that should be running 24/7 but occasionally crashes, Autoit checks that the program is running each hour and, if it's not, starts it up again).

The output from tree turned out to be a bit unwieldy. Turns out the best solution was dir with a few extra options.

  • Ah nice.

DIR did spring to mind but i thought that tree would be more suitable. Glad you got it sorted.

  • Anyone interested in a GTX 760 4gb for £50 before I throw it on eBay?

  • would this be a noticeable improvement on a GTX 750 2gb? Will pm.

  • Blagged an old pair of computer speakers and currently trying to work out how to switch between the headphones and speakers.

PC has a front and rear panel have the standard green 3.5mm jack. When I plug headphones in the front the speakers switch off. I want a way to manually turn on the speakers - don't mind if only the rear jack plays or both front and rear jack play.

    Am I missing something obvious?

Both playback devices are listed as the same name (can't seem to find a way to rename them) and when I switch between them all that happens is the headphones turn on or off - but the speakers will not play if the headphones are plugged into the front jack.

    Any ideas?

Trying to download https://realtek-download.com/download-hd/ but for some reason it's taking forever (1.30hrs!). But thought there might be something simple I'm missing.

    Cheers.

EDIT: I think I've renamed them at least.

  • I'm going to guess it's the joy of this connector and the ac97/hd audio split on some realtek stuff or even just a driver that supports it and has created 2 devices for you with neither of them being the headphone ports.

Try have a dig around in control panel to setup more audio devices.

  • The wifi in my surface seems to have gone.

    Only device having issues.

Anyone else experienced this, not great!

  • Used to happen all the time on my old SP3...super fickle with drivers. Have had no problem with my recent SP though

  • Its weird. 2 years old and never an issue, suddenly it just no internet, or super slow. The will just work fine.

    Not sure what to do.

Obviously my 2 year John Lewis extended warranty run out a few months back.

  • Same model as me then

I'll ask around for you and do a bit of googling. Doubt it's a hw problem.

In the meantime, have you tried deleting your WiFi adaptor from device manager and restarting? That will reinstall it.

    Also, this https://www.thurrott.com/microsoft/211736/some-surface-users-facing-wifi-connection-issues-following-firmware-update

  • I'll try that thanks.

I did have a Google, but beyond doing those simple things there wasnt much.

    Just adjusting the preamble.

  • I'll see if Microsoft issued a fix. I'm sure they would have done.

  • Appreciate it.

Delete and restated, that get's me back to 50mbps, which is what I get coming in. So the hardware is fine as you say, something software related.

    Good news! Cheers

  • Apparently it's a driver issue rather than firmware and some people say that rolling back to a previous driver version works.

I'll let you know if I find anything definitive.

  • so PC coming at some point next week... Anti virus recommendation? Been a lifelong Mac user means Anti virus is a strange concept to me...
