Cheers both. I did consider redoing the thermal paste but that will probably depend on whether I have any at home and how much I have to take apart of the laptop to take the heat sink off.

Opted out of the rollout of HP 37.5" curvy screens that's hit my floor of the office this month. The leftover screens let me upgrade my 4 mismatched 23" 1080p screens for 4 matching 27" 1080p screens. After the next phase of rollout, there might be some thin-bezel 27" 1440p IPS panels available...

Looks a bit phantom of the office tho...

The wall of screen and having the desk by the wall limits movement in my field of vision that would distract me.

My phone only has a selfie cam and I just updated it to Android 8.1 so I haven't worked out where the mirror option is in photo edit.

Anyone have a spare 3.5” HDD caddy they want to pass on (and post) for a few quid? Not keen on buying a new one for a tenner to only be used once to transfer the files...

Does anyone need any switches or a server box?
Work are looking to sell some of them, so thought I'd ask here before an intern investigates ebay / gumtree.

How much are the gs110 switches?
-
• #5111
I sure could do with at least one.

I might grab a couple of the GS110s too please

Also a gs110s if possible pending price

Cool. I'll check this morning. Ebay seems to suggest they sell for >£35.
Does that sound about right?

My Antec Elevenhundred case has a massive noisy 200mm fan on top, and a 120mm on the back. Do we think I'll get away with unplugging the big one if I'm not doing anything taxing? (it's making my little legs cold)

Try installing Speedfan. It'll change the fan speed in response to how hot the PC is running.
Also ultra quiet replacement fans aren't particularly expensive.

It only seems to recognise the CPU fan for some reason.

Only the ones plugged into the board pins will show up so anything plugged straight into the power supply will just be on full blast all the time with no sensor use.

Anyone interested in a small fast desktop / media PC?
It's a small form factor HP Z220 workstation.
(10cm x 34cm x 38cm)CPU is ~= i7-3770 (it's actually a Xeon E3-1240 v2, but they're essentially the same processor)
16GB RAM
160GB SSD and 2TB HDD
Plus a half height graphics card that outputs via HDMI and will happily feed a 4K screen. It's still very quick and quiet. I've been using it as a media PC which it's pretty overqualified for
Will wipe everything and install a fresh copy of Windows 10 (comes with a licence for Win7 which was freely upgraded to 10)
Thinking £225 unless I'm way off
Collection obv easier (from SE10), could post though at cost. -

I've actually got a very similar machine for my media center, with the addition of an external soundcard for DTS and a half height GFX card its been flawless
-
• #5121
Ah yes, I should mention it has a half height graphics card in there too.
So an HDMI out which will feed a 4k TV without any problems -

Ideal for a Plex server with that CPU.
If I had the time to reorganise all my systems I'd have been tempted. Good luck with the sale.

I'm looking to upgrade my main work drive to an m.2 ssd 1TB. Is nvme going to be worth the extra money, will there be a noticeable difference between nvme and a sata ssd? I work with some big files, often transferring large image directories so I think it could be a benefit. I'm looking at the Samsung 970 Evo plus (nice but pricey) but they also rate well for longevity.

I doubt you'd notice the difference.

Is there a free windows program that will notify me by email when hard drives start to run out of space (preferably at custom levels).
The only options I can find are either fairly pricey commercial programs or complex powershell solutions.
If youre going to try undervolting, maybe even try reseating the CPU with a decent paste.
You could even try lapping the heatsink and CPU for extra tartiness.
