  • Mind control ftw!

I think the cleanest looking levers I used on the Popes were silver Paul Cross levers. The records/c-records were ok, but a bit clunky looking. I'll see if I can dig out some pics.
The bars have such a nice shape it is a shame to put anything on them...so yeah, back to mind control option..or bar ends could be a winner?

See what your saying about gum walls and wooden rims, could be a nasty clash! But have you had a look at the "extreme" or "carbon" tub. Veloflex give a nice ride and gotta be Italian right? That's where the saddle will let you down ;)

checks for icaselle Ti saddle updates

  • Yeah Paul levers are where I'm leaning, would like to see a pic though.. Perhaps try out a Paul duplex lever and keep the bars clean at least on one side..

I'll check out those other veloflex options...the more Italian the better! As for the saddle, I know exactly what's going through your head mate!! ;-) just Pm'd Mr Cow about his saddle, so will see what model/colour it is..

  • I'll see what I can find popes/lever combos that I've tried.

I doubt you'll regret going for veloflex, not cheap mind.
Hah! yes, you know, I know that saddle will be a touch on the Caygill, I'm keeping my eyes peeled. Looks like mr. cow has all sorts of goodies, he could be your man for the hubs, no?
Gotta say, now I've seen the build so far I would love to see the brown arayas/phils on there before I trash them rims. Even just for pictures sake.

  • no!

  • NO!
(Ineed to stop posting here it's not my build)

  • How much of a mess will running brakes on a wooden rim make? Just wondering... Nice looking build btw :-)

  • you need some bright colour there. everything too browny if you feel me.

  • Cheers minty. Comments are all good..running brakes on the rims with normal pads can be problematic, as the finish can be worn off easily. This can lead to the rims warping. I'm going to experiment with leather or cork pads to avoid this..fitting them to the delta brakes could be a task though..! Will be running it fixed too, so can avoid braking in most circumstances. Nice to know they are there though.

Build did originally have more colour, but as I amassed the parts it changed into a more classic mash of brown silvery ti goodness..it's a classic build so can't really be having bright anodised bits on it.

  • I see your vision, but I can't help but say, some low profile silver rims, like the TB14s, would really suit the build. And am sure they'd be infinitely more suitable for actually riding...

  • I'd be interested to know how well Delta brakes will work with cork or leather pads. Maybe you could try magnets to increase stopping power.

  • ^?

Aren't delta brakes known for their too good stopping power? Which was their downfall and why they aren't still used, e.g. they would brake too dangerously on fast descents etc.
Although that may be due to their brake pads, can't remember exactly.

  • Malaysian, i hear what your saying. Was severely tempted when varno posted those silver open pros with record hubs. But just got to scratch this wood wheel itch. Plus, they are crafted by hand in Italy and are super light too..natures carbon! Reckon they will ride well.

As for the brakes, I thought the opposite was the case..the performance of the deltas were not strong enough compared to modern designs..

    something like that, yeah.

  • Ahh I just read a couple of articles which suggest that as you say meds, the braking power is not a strong as modern calipers.

What I initially said is from what I read in a Campagnolo book in LMNH* maybe I'm remembering it wrong :S

Whatever the case they are among the sexiest calipers ever made,

    *edit: this book

  • In my limited experience they can be tricky to set up properly, but performance was good enough, especially with the C-Rec levers (with adjuster) and perfect for this kind of "best day" bike

Without a doubt, one a the sexiest calipers, only bettered by these...

  • If my memory serves the delta was dropped for the following reasons
Heavy, Part count (loads of fiddly bits made them extremely expensive to assemble), Pain in the arse to set up

Aside from glamour, the whole point of delta was linear response, (i.e. the braking power doesn't vary across the stroke) - this wasn't hugely popular with the pro's of the day who preferred the diminishing braking power of a conventional single pivot. But the same complaints were around when dual pivot brakes came in, but it seems everyone is used to them now.

I used delta's back in the day (including on a winter bike*) - they're better than single pivots if you set them up well, and the pads last forever. They're certainly no better than a modern-day dual pivot though

    Dearr lawd

  • Black deltas...? Pretty cool..I really like the century finish too. But shouldn't campag be shiny!?!

That's a bargain you got there, Rik..!

Cheers for the heads up, hope they're not too hard to set up. My LBS guy is really into campag so might pop in for a visit.

  • Just recently received this 28 hole beauty c/o Mr.Cow - on the hunt for a front now!

  • +1 for Pugwall tyres!

  • If money is no object for this build meds, this guy has loads of campag parts for sale, and would I right in saying that you're looking for a 28h c-record pista front hub?

he appears to have one for £150 here

Sorry if you've already come across this!

  • Okay just seen your wanted ad, and someone suggesting you try campyoldy, I guess that even though it's on the list it's been sold?

  • Cheers lads, but the one he's got is with a century finish which doesnt match mine :-(

The search continues, with one possible lead at the moment.
