go to a bike shop
try on some shoes, buy them but possibly ask if they do price match

If you're nearer to 8.5 than 8, Shimano 43 will probably fit best. Returns to Wiggle are easy and cheap, so it's no big deal if they don't fit and you want a different size.

Pretty sure my lbs will not price match as they haven't done in the past, and i object to paying the prices when i don't have to. Thanks for the help, i think i will just buy them from wiggle, as like you said they are good with returns.

Go to a reputable shoe shop like Clarks, get them to measure your feet both for length AND for width.
One of the major problems with cycling shoes is the width fitment, Diadoras were generally good for std width, my LBS said Exhustar too apparently.
I'm an 8.5 & I've always worn 43s which is what I wear in normal shoes. I've had 44s from Lidl in their MTB shoes which have been fantastic for the last 4 years and cost peanuts.
My road shoes are a 44 also, don't forget your feet swell after you've been walking/cycling for long periods so always get your feet measured toward the end of the day rather than first thing.

Evans now do price matching with online stores

My experience with Shimano shoes is to always go one metric size (or half UK size) bigger than your normal shoe size.

Haven't had problems with diadora. Although saying that I think I'll be moving my pedal system soon since speedplay (I've got the ones with unlimited float) are hurting my knees.
I'm going to go back to my SPD's for a while and see how I get on, if the pain goes I'll be flogging my speedplays.

Im a whole UK size larger in Shimano sizing

I too think Specialized tend to be wider than average.
On shoes that take mtb-type cleats that screw through slots into a movable plate, check how that's covered on the inside. Some cheaper shoes just have a soft insole over the plate - that can get quite uncomfortable after a while.

How do the Mavic Zxellium's fit? Currently quite cheap at Sigma Cycles but I don't want to bother with going instore and trying.
-
• #37
I'd says closer to the Specialized than the Shimano.
I think my old Mavic were 43, and my current Shimano is 44.

Sorry what I meant is are they true to size, ie does a size 9 in casual footwear translate to size 9 in mavics.
-
• #39
Thanks Ed, so perhaps if I'm 9.5 I should go for 9.

How do the Mavic Zxellium's fit?
Like a glove, if your feet are Zxellium shaped. What are you used to? I'm notably unfussy about shoes, so although I like them that doesn't tell you much. The seem a bit roomier than my Sidis and Lakes, similar volume to my Shimanos. I have size 8.5 Mavic and Euro 43 in every other shoe I own.

Mavic size their shoes in UK
So whereas Spesh say eu 44 uk 9.6
You get a mavic 10 which is like a 45.3
Confusing but fit well once you find the correct size
Sigma returns are pretty straightforward though -

MDCC for the past couple of years I've been wearing mid-level Shimano MTB shoes.

^ I'd pop along to a Cycle Surgery and try on a pair of Mavic's then snap up the bargainous Zxelliums from Sigma.

I always feel embarrassed doing that. Yeah right you're going to come back tomorrow. They're onto your scam.

Try them on in the shop, then say "they're really comfortable, but I just cannot get past the branding- sorry, and thanks for letting me try them on, but I just don't associate Morrisons with cycling".
-

What I really should have done is gone and tried the podium shoes for these in Condor because no one expects anyone to buy those.

Why don't you come into Sigma on Saturday, try them on, and buy them at the same time

I did that today in condor
I have been looking into clipless, and i've settled on trying the time atac pedals, and i think the shimano shoes i have linked below.
I now need some size help, i'm normally a UK size 8, i would say nearer to an 8.5, and going by most shoe conversions i would be a 42, however the shimano conversion suggests i would be a 43.
Can any shimano shoes owners help me with what size would be best for me? How does your shimano cycling shoe in euro covert to your normal UK shoe size? (using the conversion chart found in the link below) Any help appreciated.
