  • I wasn't involved in writing it, raises some interesting questions I think.

  • i've not looked at the GQ thang and canny be bothered but i read that letter which sort of fills me in and other things i've heard. The dealing with the media is interesting though. I've often wondered why we let anyone come in and film this or that.

Also the east van thing...i guess when max left things went downhill!

  • lol

London may need a conflict mediator, beagle?

I think cos we just want people to know it exists so they might come play/have a clue who we are when we come begging cashola. I like the idea of a more consolidated 'message' though and maybe a 'media pack'....

  • London team for Zaragoza now not happening

  • Manchester on tour it is.

  • as for media stuff i had an idea about long term Uk wide sponsorship and ways in which we can use the media to our advantage but i wrote a long new post for a new thread and then deleted it accidently.

It was something in the region of having a National Series again but maybe sponsored by a company centrally with maybe two subsponsors for the whole season. Anyway, its much more detailed than that but ill write it out again sometime or chat to me about it at the court. It would need some kind of token UKHBPA to run it but as thats a nonstarter at the moment, we will just have to see

    sad face....

  • This thread has gone downhill.

H-bomb tells us about Toronto and the NAH?

  • Yes, talk about the ball joint rule hbomb! :)

  • not fan the ball joint....there i said it!

  • Tell us about Toronto and Ladies Army? We're booking tickets soon and it's either for then or whenever else we can make it!

  • I'll tell you guys about ladies army as soon as it's confirmed. I hope you can all make it.

The 4th July weekend seems pretty certain, just not 100%

  • Why do we want people to know that polo exists? Serious question. I don't really understand everyone's aims.

  • more players = greater exposure = better courts.

five hundred people playing carries more weight with a council, than fifty does, imho.

  • Why do we want people to know that polo exists? Serious question. I don't really understand everyone's aims.

To get more players? Increase exposure etc. People ask me about it at look mum all the time, people ask where they can come try it out etc. Many of them have seen polo in the media.

No matter whether we think it's important to attract new players or not, the discussion about our media coverage is important because whether or not we want it the media is interested. If we approach them with a firm statement about who we are and what we do then we can control our 'image'. This is important because if we don't have a say in how we are presented, as we've seen, they will present it in their own way and likely miss the point or get in wrong (i.e. Adidas, GQ).

I guess the question isn't 'do We want people to know' because they do. But rather, how can we ensure that when we speak to the media, we are presenting the community and the game in a way that represents everyone and all aspects of what we have created (i.e. A diverse, DIY run community that owns the game we play for fun, for sport, to win, to hang out, whatever).

  • I've got Playboy on the phone, I'm starting a splinter league...

  • Exposure is usually a good thing, especially when (as we've often done) the funding goes back into the sport somehow.

Exposure that promotes the sport/community side of things is always good (usually non-profit partnerships, or public sector).

Exposure that packages up bike polo as a commodity (and sells a lifestyle or product) is sometimes bad. At best you'll only have a limited number of these exposures until the uniqueness slowly becomes widely understood and you've lost the ability to communicate anything meaningful.

Growing the "sport" means finding people to partner with long-term, causing a (slow) reaction with people, extending your network of influence and eventually getting access to funding that secures the future of things.

  • Why do we want people to know that polo exists? Serious question. I don't really understand everyone's aims.

because polo is inclusive, welcomes anyone (well tries to anyway) and we would hate polo in the UK to end up as polo in New York did: a fiercly closed shop of top players that was so intimidating and elitist that now noone plays in the pit anymore cause noone wanted to play/knew about it/saw them as a closed shop

  • ^ That sounds awesome...

    this + a million

  • I'm sure it'll happen, just hold those reins tight, people... x
