  • Was that the same night as the minidrome?

I doubt it, must be over 18 months ago.

^^ I played "Creation" tonight at the bmx, wicked tune. Not sure the yoof of today were into it so much tho.

Give the plebs what they want - 'Big Mac, fries to go...'

  • ^ ah, PWEI, nice.

  • The only time you'll hear that combination of words come out of my mouth is if that track is playing.

  • Dubstep is just bad Drum and Bass for the kids who never got to enjoy loading Jetset Willy on a 48k from tape.

I got diddled a while back with the Stereo MC's at that church place in plat fields. Turned out to be just one of them trying to be a DJ, deep down and dreary.

Eh grandad, stop bangin on about yer fookin Drum n MidRange, yo!

I was in the 'priviliged' position of engineer at a lot of really early Dubstep nights. It took a geologically long time for anything interesting to happen with it but once the actually talented producers emerged there was quite a lot of well crafted tunes come around.

Btw, ik ben grootvader: I firmly believe that DnB became just mindless phqn noise in 2001, no bloody melody to the bassline. And what was all that pap about Pendulum 'saving' DnB??!!

  • I'll be honest. I've yet to do a dubstep night so I shouldn't judge to harshly. I had a DJ friend a few years back who told me I should get into just as it was starting to break through, but frankly he was a bit of a cock and I didn't listen to him. Since then I've just not known people into that stuff and haven't bothered hunting it down. I'll have to have a chat with you some time on a listening list to try.

My bass requirements were serviced more by Reggie/Digi Dub variations, listening at home rather than clubs in a more 'mellow' frame of mind. Kef Kit 104s with B139 racetrack bass drivers were enough in a domestic environment, at least my parents neighbours thought so.. but then I had friends who lived not far from where you are now who ran 1/4 wave Kef transmission lines and a rather cheeky class a amp with an output stage that might well have come from your old labs who made a persuasive argument that more was better.

  • I think my inherited-fae-granny 'speakers are KEF, unfeasibly sensitive to tone controls: prominent mids when run flat but stick a loudness filter over it and they boom right down to 40Hz :-p James Blake nearly had 'em off the bookshelf! depth over clarity, love it.

Re old labs - headroom sure is ;-) Running at 11? need more power in your amp mate!

Oh, and Dubstep's over baby - so my 6yr old says. It's played on Radio 1 .'. no longer cool. As far as I can tell dancemusic's moving back to the late 90's - nae bad thing.

  • If you've never played with B139's then you don't know what you're missing. 4" throw and a solid block cone with equivalent surface area of a 12". Loading it into T-line gave a meaningful response to the low mid 20's. The cabs were about 5' tall, 3' deep and 18" wide. For a domestic rig it was at the more serious end of the spectrum.

The amp was a home build by an EE mate of theirs, about 100W Class A and affectionately known as 'The Beast'. The power coil weighed in at about 15Kg and the heat sinks about the same. It compared well to a Levison or Krell power amp. At it's best he had it doing near perfect 16Hz square waves at half power measured on a HP Scope. Some of the new digital stuff would kill it but it if nothing else it made a fantastic sputnik heater ;-)

Nowadays I'm on a pair of rather battered 1974 Tannoy Devons with the 12" HPS Dual Concentric drivers. Not bad for £60 from Smack Converters seeing as they seem to go for £400+ even in poor condition. They could do with new surrounds fitting but still kick out the dub and image like compact monitors even when positioning is well and truly screwed.

I'll trust the word of the 'yoof' and dust of my glow sticks. If UK Garage becomes what it once was I'll not be unhappy.

  • Just been sent this... "Manchester Sky Ride will be taking place for its fourth year on Sunday 15th July! More info to follow."

  • Hmmmmmmmm, Tannoy... Loooooove Tannoy. The Dual Concentric stuff SHOULD NOT WORK. But it does :) Had some 400W beasties that required some ugly EQing - -8.5dB across near a whole octave at 2kHz (and more), but they are the smoothest and sweetest wee boxes I've ever heard, would absolutely love to do a soul gig on them. If I won the lottery I would buy a mansion just so I could have enough rooms for all the Tannoy top end domestic I would buy.

  • I listen to all my music through my phones speakers, it's well good

  • tshhtstshtshhhststshhstshstshhs.

I hope you mumble self-consciously in an arhythmical fashion at the back of the bus.

  • Na bro, he practices 'is spittin init.. got to get his diss sorted for the next time some bad man disrespect im.

Still never plucked up the courage to turn round and drop the lines of a mature rapper at one of them - Ya betta step off and walk ya pure roach!

As for the Tannoys... Never, and I mean never have a look at the solid granite cabs that Slate Audio do for them...

  • Not happy. That was mean. Not only was I compelled to open Pandora's Box but the mighty Google found http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul10/articles/slateprodragon.htm for me.

  • Igloo reggae rig??? Do I really see 34 piezos and 16 bullets??? Very smiley response curve, methinks :-D

  • I see the start of a potentially kick as party! As for acoustics and kit, I'm not playing that game again until I have money and a room large enough to house it.

  • Price crash on the entry price for the ride:

    http://greatcycle.org/Default.aspx

Now £10 for any of the 3 distances, downside is that it's now sponsored by the daily mirror.

  • I still say we get pissed up on cheap cider and shout "pay some fucking road tax!" at people all day.

agreed, we should find a nice patch of grass somewhere along the route and drink and heckle

  • I like getting drunk sitting on grass and shouting.

  • Q. How do you confuse a daily mail reader?
    A. Tell them that asylum seekers are the natural predator of paedophiles.

  • Q. How do you confuse a daily mail reader?
    A. You don't need to, they are already confused.

  • Nice to know we have some retro hifi buffs about - currently thumping away at Kawasaki Towers - Spendor SP9s/Ruark Talismans/TDL RTL 2s/Linn Aktiv Keilidhs/bookshelf RAMs...

  • Given the bike collection I should have guessed you'd be down with the retro vibe. I'm not a fan of the TDL's lack of midrange and overblown bass but the rest of it is all lush kit. LK140 / LK100 or you going to kill me with tales of bridged mono and a brace of the fuckers?
