Anyone able to offer gearing advice for the WH sprint?
I'm running 49x15 right now, which i find good for mass start as it allows acceleration. -

You'll probably need to go a bit higher, you'll get done for top-end speed by the big strong boys, even if you get the jump on them.
-
• #129
How much higher?
51, 52? -
• #130
50/15 used to be the standard all-round gear at the Hill, I'd go for 52 if you can make it work. The guys in the White Hope tend to be up and coming young sprinters from all over the country, does that describe you?

Someones got to lose. Better to lose to the best than the worst.
I'll get my hands on a 52 and see how it feels.
Can you explain make it work? Do you mean have the ability to jump on it quickly? -
• #132
Top man!
I don't know how entries work now, but you might need to show some experience... What I meant is you need to be able to 'jump' on your chosen gear, then spin it up to full speed, not be labouring to push the gear over. If you have a 14 you could try that as a cheaper alternative with your existing 49 which would give you a gear only 0.9 inches higher than 52/15. If you really are skinny this'll be tough, Victoria Pendleton only occasionally went to 96 and you'll be on 94.5!

Is 52 too much then? Or is that what everyone else will be on?
And thanks!
-
• #134
Try it, because if you can't sprint on it you'll get your arse kicked anyway! Most of the big stars will be on 100+, but my knowledge is not the most recent, try and find a current amateur (as in non-International) sprinter and ask....

I should be riding in the white hope sprint, my gear ratio is top secret
(49-14)

• #136
Yeah pm'd you. Thanks
Cheers colin. -

Sorry, but I find it a bit risible that you enter the white hope and then ask on here for advice on gearing.
I would say use whatever you currently race sprints on. 'most' will use 92-96"

That's fair RPM.
Everyone has to start somewhere. -

Monday/Wednesday league meetings would be a better starting point, do they still exist? But... enters White Hope/rides timed qualification/fails to qualify for match sprints/learns something/no harm done! Or we could be stifling a great new sprinting talent with negativity. You DO have a racing licence don't you Skinny?

Wednesday league exists. A much improved version these days.
Mondays stopped because of poor turn out between the two leagues. then when the track reopened they were utilised to attract more riders (if you can believe there was actually a time when HHV needed to attract punters! ) Nowadays, Monday is race training/coach led racing.
Assuming the WHS still has a qualifying 200, then I hope skinny has actually done some f200tts at some point! Otherwise he needs to get down to Sunday mornings in march and train with the guys who are racing GF

I dont think there is time in the program for these things. If you have the patience to watch them doing lap after lap after lap after lap of warmup, then 70 odd laps of racing then you're a better man than most.
It takes about 18 hours, the novelty of seeing pensioners in leather aprons standing up on decrepit, custom motorcycles lasts about 5 minutes and only ever happens once.
I beg to differ, far more impressive to watch than the mopeds...

No no, I agree. They are even more dismal!

According to FB the big bikes and S&M outfits will be out.
-
• #146
Yup! The Triumphs will be out again this year and the pacers will be wearing a fetching black leather outfit brought in especially from Holland.
-
• #147
Yeah!
Brrrrrmmmmrrmmrmrmrm. -

So looks like Robert Forestemann is going to be racing. I'm even more gutted I cant race, I'd love to get a chance to get knocked out of the racing by him.
-
• #149
You wouldn't though mate, you'd beat him.
-
• #150
Maybe if he was on a tiny little gear and I had a few ciders before hand.
Merely a nibble!
