  • @ewanmac You can get those finger clipping ones really cheap on amazon, I was convinced that buying one that shows blood oxygen levels was a good idea (more things to measure, thanks @Dammit!) and that wasn't expensive.

If you do this you're going to have to take pictures - or a video. No matter how silly Moz looks.

  • With our dogs we try to make sure they don't exhaust or dehydrate themselves. We take a canine electrolyte solution with us and take regular breaks. When they run full tilt for a while there saliva turns into a white froth, and as they leap over berms, logs, doubles etc this gets streaked all over their bodies. Our rough rule of thumb is if they are foaming at the mouth or struggle to regain breath after a couple of minutes then they need a break.

Allegedly Viszlas are the 2nd fastest breed of dogs

I think a dog doing 40mph would seriously upset strava nobbers.

  • @hats Thanks, I'll have a bit of a google. I found a DailyFail article about a collar that measures HR but it was $299 and I couldn't find the original page.

@dancing james Canine electrolyte? Our hydration strategy mainly revolves around drinking from puddles and the river! Exhaustion/dehydration is probably more likely if you are taking them mtb-ing with you, but I definitely noticed her begin to flag when we did intervals over summer. I doubt I'll be doing any long runs for a while but I did think it might be a good idea to take a small bowl and a bottle of plain water. She gets a steady supply of treats along the way as well to make sure she sits and waits at styles/gates.

  • @ewanmac Annie's previous partner raced huskies so she is clued up about dogs and exhaustion. She pays silly money for sachets of electrolyte but often stock cube and sugar is suggested and a few dog trainers have recipes for such solutions.

@gabes Amber's owner barely rides at Swinley any longer because she is so famous he is constantly stopped! People often ask if our dogs are Amber. It is funny watching them jump doubles that we roll over.

  • Well, he made the dog famous. No Sympathy.

  • Is there a really good feature of Strava Premium that I'm missing?

For cycling I have a PowerTap, but I can do all of the analysis I need in Golden Cheetah.

For running I feel like I'm a long way away from needing any of the extra tools it gives. I've got another 12kg to lose and to build up to reasonable regular distances and so any analysis is pretty much pointless at the moment.

I have no problems with motivation at the moment, so being able to see my position against my age group isn't necessary.

  • I really like the newly updated "fitness and freshness sections" would be good use for your power meter etc. if you're not clued up on that front. Otherwise there really arn't that many particularly great features - but I've already paid for the 12 months.

  • Could you post a screenshot? I think strava hardly pushes for conversions. The usability of premium features is subjective but they should push premium a little more by showing what it'd be like (trials which they do but not as effectively) and sample screenshots/videos of premium stuff ..

  • i don't think veloviewer is polished enough, it's clever and all, and I do use it, but it needs to be better laid out, better designed, and then I'd think about going premium, but as it stands, it doesn't tell me much that strava doesn't tell me, so I can live without it.

  • BOSH. For @Greenbank too. There are plenty of fun things you can do with power meters but I don't have one right now so can't say.

  • I like the new premium feature, quite useful for understanding freshness etc.

  • Looks a bit like the Training Stress page in Golden Cheetah.

Does that Strava page take into account other exercise (runs/swimming) for fitness/fatigue?

  • Not if you mark it as the correct activity type.

  • Is there a really good feature of Strava Premium that I'm missing?

    Not that I've found.

  • Ta. Money saved.

  • If you are using Golden Cheeta, Training peaks etc. to log your Power data. All a Premium Strava account will do is display the same data. But in a less customisable fashion. The Charts on Strava are a bit more pretty. But you cant delve into the data so deeply. If you are already using a better training site. They dont offer anything New.

I have a Premium Training Peaks account and a Premium Strave account. I wont be renewing the Strava one.

  • Strava does seem to credit me With greater speed and bigger ascent numbers though.

Has me as doing 108.4 Kph Down from Croix-de-fer.

Couldnt have been more than 103 ;)

  • That looks amazing.

Bring me! I'd fit in your hand luggage!

Also. 141w avaerage seems doable, although my FTP above 3000m is probably 7w.

  • I think you and I could get away with the classic

  • This is an interesting (and somewhat sad) story sent to me by an anti-cycling buddy who lives in NYC. I don't use Strava so can't really comment but I can imagine how trying to break PBs could become an addiction

This photo on the LMNH instagram tonight seems rather apt

  • I find the blaming of Strava in cases like this to be utterly ridiculous. It's like blaming Nokia for a driver running over a pedestrian while texting on their phone. It's Nokia's fault for making phones with SMS.

The rider is at fault. And if he has no self-control or sense of responsibility towards other users of the park/road then that fault does not lie with Strava.

  • an anti-cycling buddy .. oxymoron surely ..
