Rum

  • I’m yet to commit to a bottle of Pussers

I got a bottle of this in the end. I’m glad I tried it and I quite like it. I think Woods is better value, though. Pussers works out about 30% more expensive for what is a very similar rum.

  • Frank a few of these this afternoon. Closest thing to petrol I've ever drank. Do not recommend.

  • This looks rather good, not tried it yet -

  • The wife smuggled 3L of this home in her suitcase from St Vincent a couple of weeks ago, once you get past the initial jet fuel hit its incredibly good, tastes like sugar cane. Sadly we don’t have the original bottles, she had to put it in plastic water bottles to beat the airport scanners.

  • this any good? sent to me in error and contemplating keeping it...

  • It's ok, I prefer Mount Gay
Both are nice with pineapple juice

  • Not much rum talk here, hopefully this will provoke some opinions.

    L-R, bad-good

    • DMF Coffee Rum is disqualified. It's a great coffee liqueur but there is no rum taste.
    • Old Hopking (Aldi) spiced is the worst thing I've ever drunk. The rum is harsh, the spice tastes artificial.
    • Old Hopking (Aldi) dark is considerably better than the spiced, but is only fit for cooking.
    • Not pictured: Negrita and similar overly-sweet Spanish rums would rank here.
    • Rumish is a non-alcoholic rum alternative made from apple juice, capsicum, vanilla, and nutmeg. Maybe other spices but I can taste those. It's a pleasant drink, and considerably better than the previous rums.
    • Morrisons dark rum is perfectly respectable. It's great to mix or spice yourself. Absolutely nothing wrong here.
    • Asda dark rum is very similar to the Morrisons one. A recommended mixing rum.
    • M&S Bajan XO is the cheapest rum I'd choose to drink straight. It's very good but a bit too much added sugar.
    • Liverpool Rum is an interesting one. It's good but I would have expected a 16 year-old rum to be better. On pouring, it's a bit harsh. Sat for ten minutes, it loses the harshness and opens up a lot.
    • Plantation Original Dark is the benchmark. It's a great traditional, fruity Jamaican rum.
    • Rum Sixty Six Family Reserve (12 years-old) is a smooth Bajan rum. Initial alcohol, but then oily and complex.
    • Sunset Captain Bligh XO is incredibly smooth! Quite sweet, and aged in bourbon barrels which do impart some character.
    • Plantation Stiggin's Fancy Pineapple Rum is my personal favourite. Massively fruity, with gentle smoke and spice edges. Good rum, rich with pineapple from both fruit and husk.

  • I had some other purple bottle of that dead man's finger stuff, horrible!

  • Hemp? I was curious about that one, but not inspired to purchase. How herbal and sweet was it?

  • Yes, I thought it was disgusting.
    Took ages to finish it
Sickly sweet, not very herbal, but I'm used to quite herbal Lithuanian spirits

  • This stuff on the other hand, lovely.
Similar to Mount Gay I'd say, just the right amount of sweetness

  • Lufgus has a rum thread? Of course it does!!

Shall check out a few of the above recommendations having recently developed a taste for the sugary goodness myself when I finished off a bottle of my better half’s R.L. Seale’s Old Brigand. It’s such great stuff she says I have to take her to Barbados to replace it if I’m unable to buy it from anywhere closer to home.

  • Plantation Pineapple has been seen on this thread before, it’s one of my favourites.

We buy Negrita when we’re over in Spain, the dark rum is terrible but their white rum is dirt cheap and ok mixed with coke.

Can vouch for this! incredibly tasty and super smooth Cornish rum

  • I’ve been drinking a lot of rum over lockdown, Mount Gay Black barrel has been my go to. Skepta themed Havana club also a highlight. Low point was getting a couple of bottles of Don Papa on an internet deal, insanely sweet worse than Aldi spiced Kraken rip off (which actually tastes ok with coke)

  • I've just forced myself to finish off the Don Papa, still rank even drowned in a lot of Jamaican ginger ale. Ordered some Brugal 1888 which is supposed to be nice...

  • Not open for tastings though

  • Damn, I am so jealous! I loved riding in Barbados, the local riders were a joy to be with as well. I had a great afternoon on the East Coast where all things alcoholic were dirt cheap, discussing the best way back to Bridgetown with a road gang over quite a lot of Mount Gay. Possibly the best bit was a cricket ground called 'Desolation Warriors' in the NE, where goats grazed the outfield mid-game. If I didn't love Mount Gay (I do) I would still drink it out of pure nostalgia. Did you ride Cherry Tree Hill?

  • What...?! That’s awesome, enjoy a glass or two for me. In all seriousness, I’d make it worth your while if you’re in any sort of position to take orders.

  • Excellent! Hopefully there are plentiful other tasting opportunities.

The Drop Store has an offer on Foursquare Rum Sixty Six, for anyone wishing to try it: white, 6 year and 12 year for £45.

  • In my local bar

  • Seems a good price for 3 x 70cl
    Is it any good?

  • The 12 year is very good. I've not had the others before, but the 12 year is £30+ on its own, so it's a great deal.

  • Cheers!

Ordered the 3 rums, plus a whiskey combo of Buffalo Trace and Pogues Irish whiskey for £30.
5 bottles of booze for £75, plus there was a welcome to the mailing list 10% code (THANKYOU) bringing it all down to £67.50, or £13.50 per bottle.

At those prices its worth it for it, even if its shit, it'll go well in cocktails or for guests not good enough for the premium stuff!

  • Ooh had forgotten about Old Brigand, my mums Barbadian friend used to regularly bring me a bottle back but hasn't been for a while
