I drank a bottle of apple smirnoff one night, a friend warned me how sickly it can be so I mixed it.
I can't drink Malibu or Tequila because of similar experiences as yours. -

Get a passion fruit, chop off the top like a hard boiled egg, pour in the vodka of your choice in, carefully and gently stir with a teaspoon handle, drink like a shot.

A friend who was a chemist bought a load of carbon powder and a liter of cheap tescos vodka, mixed the two together and then used to periodically shake. After a week he filtered the carbon out, and apparently the vodka tasted good.
The logic is that most vodka is apparently filtered using charcole/carbon, and you're doing a similar thing. That is the carbon picks up the impurities, etc. and then gets thrown away,. Apparently you can pick up the powder for next to nothing in bulk.
Might be a good money saving tip for students/parties.

home option - smirnoff black [but early batches, with plastic cap] - being distilled in coppered alembics, got a nice texture and hint of fruits

Non-flavoured vodka is the least interesting spirit of all, it is essentially alcohol and water, there is nothing in it's production process that could make one better quality than the other, so you may as well buy the cheapest.....it's not whisky....the only difference between any of them is alcohol content and the amount of money spent on packaging and marketing.
I'm with eyebrows, it's a good base for making home-made flavoured spirits, purely because it has no taste of it's own (apart from the alcohol).
When I was chef in Paris we used to steal bottles of Absolut from the bar stock room and fill up empty Volvic bottles with it and casually drink form the these during serive under the eyes of the owner.

yeah krupnik is very sweet but the flavours and essentials they add are just lovely like the smoothest scotch whisky it just trickels down ones throat sooo smooth
the starka also has anything but a simple vodka taste very flavoursome complext notes / toneswow do i sound like gilly cooper yet ( she is the wine lady right )
