  • link should be fixed? just rode to ladybower, slept, then followed a few sections of routes from the dark peak mtb book, was fun but tough.

  • Nice - could've finished it off with a couple of final climbs - instead of Hayfield, head to Buxworth, then climb the short but sharp Silk Hill, drop into my home town (Whaley Bridge), then head up Whaley Lane past Edwina Currie's house and go over the tops to Disley.

  • Yeah nice one, that time I was fooked and had to be home early pm so bailed where I did, that Hayfield Rd isn't a nice welcome back to tarmac, sketchy with Sunday drivers. Hope to get another one done before summer is out.

the bit between Glossop and New Mills is as accurate as I can map, the other bits not so for ease of mapping.

    ta very much :)

  • I suppose this is the place to share my ride today - I went to see the TdF stage 2 on Sunday at Midhopestones with my dad, we drove out from Manchester over Snake Pass then back (after getting embroiled in the most absurd traffic jam I've ever been in) - anyway, as you do, as we were going over Snake Pass I was thinking "Hmm, could I do this on the bike"? Now with today apparently being the last day of nice weather before it turns, I thought I'd make the most of my chance and give it a go, and it turns out the answer is yes! Just rode out from Manchester, up and down the other side, then turned round and came back! Some very sketchy blustery winds at times and a pretty strong headwind on the (downhill) run into Manchester, which was actually quite appreciated being on fixed so was enough for me to push on without spinning out. I felt east-to-west was steeper (maybe because I did it second?!) but my internet mapping thing tells me it's the other way round? Anyway, lovely weather, lovely scenery and I now feel very pleased to know I can make it over one of the more notable hilly bits around these parts (though I'm sure there are many climbs that would be worse!)

  • Woodbine Cafe & Cottages for sale. Hope cafe stays good.

  • Went out walking yesterday. Wished I was riding the whole time. Gf was not impressed by me telling her this repeatedly.
Bradwell's ice cream and Bakewell Pud were good as usual.

  • Back into the peaks tmw! Hopefully.

  • I'll be there Sunday all being well. Enjoy.

  • Where are you heading?

  • Hillyish Road loop following gentle ride out to Adlington. I have to gps record (and waymark some points of note) the loop for someone else.

Lemme know if you want to come along.

Had been thinking of a bivy tonight but think I'd have frozen!

  • Sounds good and cheers for the offer, sadly (for my legs/sanity) I'll be over that way for some off-road-loaded-uphill practice... urghhh...

I was thinking of popping out tonight too but felt under the weather(/like I've been drinking decaf)all week so decided to give it a miss, haven't managed to get out at all since I saw you at the pub... stupid life getting in the way :(

  • I'll wave if I see you over a drystone wall! Ditto this was my best chance to get out, missed one other due to faffing about if to go or not. :/

    Bring on next summer...

  • Have a good day tmw, Ive got a bit of the flu so opted for less hilly option today. I find I need full lung capacity to enjoy hills and I felt like crap this morning. Still had a lovely ride, and hope that tmw will be similarly nice.

  • Shame bug meant you couldn't hit the hills proper. I've just been told I'm going to have to gps a route in (on?) the wirral instead, doh.

edit: more like Delamere for me now...

  • Heading out to Great Hucklow this afternoon, could be wet and hilly.

  • It was hilly, not wet infact perfect conditions. Big overall ascent, I measured it on Strava for the elevation profile

Had family time instead of riding back, nice decent to Hope, Woodbine Cafe then short ride up a hill and back whilst killing time waiting for train back.

  • We're staying in Shrewsbury for the CX national champs tomorrow. Looks like a good excuse to make the traverse from Sheffield to Leek before heading into Shropshire. Gets me on a couple of new roads.

  • ^ Axe Edge?

  • No, Ringinglow, Froggatt, Calver, Hassop, Bakewell, Monyash, Crowdecote (massive road porn alert) Longnor, top of the Roaches and then down the A53 to Leek. Very enjoyable if a bit chilly with the headwind. Keeps getting tougher as you go on though so happy to drop down onto the flat to Shrewsbury.

  • Cool, bit of an epic ride by sounds of it.

  • It wasn't that long but felt a it epic. My wife's Garmin logged 2100m of climbing in 116k and the majority of that would have been between Sheffield and Leek. Makes me feel a bit better about the relatively low speed between the two.

Next weekend I'm intending to head out to through Bakewell to Parsley Hay, down the Via Gellia to Cromford and back to Sheffield through Matlock, Rowsley and Chatsworth.

  • Next week should be equally epic by the sounds of it, enjoy.

  • Googled Via Gellia, loks ace.

My most recent peak road porn nominations are Longstone edge (moor rd from great longstone) for the incredible view and The Jarnett/Flagg lane for the smooth rollingness.

  • I had a great ride up the Via Gellia earlier this year - it's not much to drive along (I used to commute that way) but amazing to cycle up - it's the perfect big ring gradient, there was an amazing smell of wild garlic, the landscape changes from deep woods to moorland, there's a stream that runs alongside it ... pretty perfect.

^^^ Rather than going via Monyash and Parsley Hay from Bakewell, I like cutting through Youlgreave, Middleton and Elton - the road surface is absolutely terrible, but cuts out main roads and is v picturesque.
