  • Looks like you could easily slip in a detour to Foolow or Eyam. Foolow has a cafe with tea and cake in a tiny building just behind the church hall. Eyam has a plethora of cafes perfect for a lunch stop.

  • Meant to post this in here but forgot. Thanks very much for all the route advice everyone, it was a brilliant couple of days.

Went for a challenging but beautiful couple of days in the Peak District. Train out to Sheffield, cycle up some bastard hills, stay in a remote youth hostel and eat enormous meals for dinner and breakfast, then another day of slightly less bastard hills. Wonderful way to spend a weekend, and I managed to make it up Winnats Pass and Snake Pass without giving up at any point. Although I probably recorded the slowest ever ascent times on both of these. Great stuff, and nice gently achey legs this morning.

For people who are interested in routes etc.

Day 1: Sheffield to YHA Gradbach, via Hope Valley / Winnats Pass

  • One for the Stravaheads:

    Looks fun.

  • Having done most of those, some regularly, I can safely say that will be a bitch.

  • After a rather busy period of doing a lot of other things, I managed to get out into the Peaks for the first time in ages today. Very windy but wonderful. Also my first time out since bumping up from 42x17 to 42x16 so a little trepedatious about how it was going to go.

Headed up Rivelin and over Moscar Top to Ladybower before dropping into the Hope Valley and into Hathersage for a spot of lunch in Outside. Was just locking up the bikes when one of their staff came and told us to bring them inside and held open the door for us. After lunch we started headed home by riding up Surprise View but after Fox House we decided it was too nice a day to head back that early so we dropped down through Froggat to Calver and came through Baslow and up to Owler Bar while the sun was still shining. Really please to get a nice little ride in without thinking about targets and goals and stuff, just pleasant cycling.

However, I do have some targets to focus on for this year and to help me train I've devised the FoxClover Fixed Wheel Challenge. Basic premise is to ride up to Fox House from Sheffield, drop down into Hathersage and climb back up again, descend through Nether Padley to Grindleford and climb back up again and finally descend through Froggat to Calver and climb back up again. The aim is to do it all within the Audax standard minimum speed of 15kmph.

    Route is here http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/foxclover-fwc

    42km - 1500m climbing.

Will be giving that a go after Christmas.

If you feel inclined to give it at go, post your results here.

  • The aim is to do it all within the Audax standard minimum speed of 15kmph.

That's not far off escape velocity. I'm out.

  • I had a good ride on Sunday, first time out for a while. From Sheffield over Fox House, descended to Grindleford, ascended Sir William Hill lane to Bretton, then followed the edge around through Abney back around to Hathersage; then back home over Fox House again. Terrific views from Bretton and around the gliding club but terribly hard climb out of Grindleford, it is very steep for the first mile or so. Might try it in reverse next time to see how punishing it is in that direction.

  • It's much easier approaching from the other side. I once did the same climb as you into a howling headwind and was barely able to make much ground against a couple of ramblers walking the same way.

  • Yesterday was a lovely day out. Rode up to Owler Bar, down to Baslow and along to Chatsworth and back via Bakewell, lunch at Hassop Station and the climb up Padley. All rather spring like and sunny, nice easy riding.
Today I decided to ride over to Congleton to meet my wife who was doing a fell race. There was a headwind all the way and it was a bit miserable and showery. On the climb out of Buxton I was forced to deploy the 19T on the other side of the wheel and discovered that the A54 is a series of 10% climbs and dives most of the way to Congleton. I feel like I've been beaten up. These roads are not fixed wheel friendly.

  • Nope, but they are fixed wheel fun.

  • How was the fell race?
Quite classic conditions out there today, wish I'd gone yesterday!

  • Not too bad by all accounts. The ground is still pretty waterlogged so quite mucky in places. Most people seemed to be coming back happy with their times so not too much of a slog given the conditions. Even some brief moments of sunshine. They were walking around the hall with Morrisons bags on their feet at the end so keeping classy as ever.

  • Fell Runners keep it as classy as can be. I remember kids at Ladbroke Grove checking out my PB Walsh trainers. The less said about the fluoro Ron Hill hat and the purple bumbag the better but you've got to have somewhere to carry your whistle. Perhaps not in West London.
I had a lovely ride today in parts. Visiting the olds and accompanying them up to Kinder Reservoir in sedate fashion. Had a return train ticket but the weather was too nice not to miss climbing Rushop Edge and popping down to Edale to connect with le grand frere.

  • Not sure if this has been about for a while, but I've just seen it:

    http://velotastic.co.uk/peak-district-challenge/

14 climbs in the Peak District, approx 200km riding and 3500m climbing. The aim is to plan your own route and knock it out in one lengthy day. It looks to have the makings of a cracking day out. I am keen to give it a crack later in the year.

  • A couple of us are doing a couple of days (4) & nights (3) touring in the Peak District if anyone is interested - starting May 26th, B&Bs in Buxton, Bakewell, Ilam

  • 3rd relevant thread to say 76 on/off road miles overnighter bivvy by ladybower at about half way great fun. Have missed being out that way on a bike. Rushup Edge bridleway from Mam Tor side was brilliant riding (and pushing).

  • Sorry to bump this thread with some unrelated nonsense, but can anyone advise me what Manchester to Woodhead reservoir might be like on a SS or fixed?

  • ^^ got a route for that? Sounds lovely

  • Not too bad. Doable on 70GI if you don't mind some short stretches of tacking on the steeper ramps. That presumes you come up the B road out of Glossop. The Woodhead Road is easier on the gradient pretty busy most of the time. Challenging even for an experienced cyclist.

  • Bugger. This is all making me wish I'd done more cycling when I lived in Sheffield.

  • ^^ got a route for that? Sounds lovely

Gmaps wouldn't save it back then, page just crashed when click save, but if you nudge me next week I'll use another app to remap it.

  • Cheers, will do

Ah, okay. Thanks. I'm currently running 52/17 so it might be a struggle. I may have a 42t chainring knocking about that would make things easier...

the bit between Glossop and New Mills is as accurate as I can map, the other bits not so for ease of mapping.

    1. Did you do the Sett Valley Trail or something more interesting?
