  • He wrote something just weekend didn't he for the NYT or something similar?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/12/opinion/sunday/how-to-get-doping-out-of-sports.html?_r=1

That's really interesting, Clive - it's basically the same piece I read, only written about himself! Thanks for posting it.

From the numbers he's quoted about himself he was one of the guys who only would have got a teeny tiny bump from EPO as his HCT was at 48.5 compared to the 50 limit already, so if that's all he did without blood transfusions etc. why did he bother?

    Marginal gains. :)

  • Viagra or Chris Boardman induced erections are both folly.

The Dutch and German track cyclists trained at altitude before London 2012. Team GB didn't. They may have used Chris's tents but he's admitted in the past they might not work. Teun Mulder (who shared a bronze with in the Keirin) didn't join the rest of the Dutch team at altitude and he won stuff.

There hasn't been conclusive proof that altitude training actually works (other than for avoiding drug tests obviously trollolololol).

  • The tents do work. The beetroot soup not so sure.

Again, with the nitrates, there have been studies that show benefit and studies that show no benefit.

If everyone was targeting 50, that percentage off is probably enough to make all the difference.

  • Viagra
    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/06/060624120556.htm

"One of the quirkiest presentations [451] was about the effect of viagra (sildenafil) on endurance performance at a simulated moderately high altitude of 3900 m. All 10 of the trained cyclists in the study performed a 6-km time trial worse at altitude than they would have at sea level, as you would expect, but four of them were much worse (15 min to complete the distance instead of 10 min). The extra impairment in these four cyclists disappeared when they consumed sildenafil before the performance test. There was little effect of the sildenafil on the other six cyclists at altitude, and little effect on all 10 cyclists at sea level. How come? By dilating arterioles, sildenafil reversed the excessive hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction that limited cardiac output in the four cyclists. See the full paper in J Appl Physiol for more. I doubt whether there would be substantial benefit for any athletes at moderate altitude."

It might help people with problems competing at altitude but for everyone else.. there's mastercard.

    Or sort of, or something

  • This is a good read if you're interested in knowing what JV has to say in more detail

  • ^ that would be a good one for the doping thread

  • Curse of the falling carrot strikes again; Sammy Sanchez has done his collarbone this morning so no ToB.

And another exit at Leekygas with Moser on his way too.

  • "We came up with some crazy plans and fortunately we had the legs," said Danielson. "Our team is pretty strong here and it was alot of fun to pull it off today. The last kilometre I knew I had won but with 2km to go I didn't think I was going to win and honestly what went through my mind was my wife yelling at me saying 'don't ever look back!'"

    so beautiful

  • That's a shame. He missed the Olympics as well after injuring in the Tour didn't he?

I'm going to see two ToB finishes, Stoke and Caerphilly. Should be a giggle

So Spartacus is out of the TT and Wiggins has announced he won't contest it since he's won Olympic gold and can't be arsed to train for the Worlds, which means the TT is pretty open, or at least who will finish behind Martin is. Shame it won't be a top-quality field. Wonder if Froome will be riding after the Vuelta?

  • its pretty confusing watching the vuelta during the day and the usa pro challenge in the night. a brit + a scot/irish commenting on both. the other day carlton kirby called brian sean a bunch of times and had a laugh about it as well.

  • I watched the end of the vuelta in swedish today after a depressingly fruitless day house hunting in Gothenburg. Awesome finish-Sky trying the TdF tactic of steaming up the climb so no one can attack and basically Froome giving Roddy a lead out.

No fucking clue what was being said about it though. Still better than Sean or Carlton though!

  • Still better than Sean

Wash your mouth out with soap!! That's blasphemy.

    or Carlton though!

    You're not wrong there though......incidentally.

  • these sprint events are quite weird arent they. interesting event nevertheless

  • Excellent wins from EBH and Cav today. Good day for Sky

Rapha confirmed to be doing team sky kit next year. It'll be interesting to see how well they do marginal gains.

  • Wonder if that includes GB SKY too. Presume not.

The marginal gains gear will still be made in the same way, in the same place... Just with better style and more (sweatshop) suffering. Rapha will be supplying sartorial evening wear and podium attire

  • With special edition 'Rasta' accented jersey to celebrate Wiggo's pathos laden spliff puffing.

I'm still awaiting the Rapha morning coat. Comon Mottram!

  • Cound has the knives out for Wiggo on twitter. Apparently he didn't thank any riders or staff for their support at the tour. Sounds about right, given Millar's past comments.
