  • A few people I know are interested in what happened at the Londoners on Bikes meeting on 20/01/2011.

    I've popped this in the Private section, and in a new thread rather than the campaigning thread as I'm not sure how much of it is to be floated in public.

    The meeting was quite interesting. There were a number of people on there, a couple of whom admitted to being on the Forum (I can't recall exactly who you were, but hi anyway). People that have stuck in my mind (in no particular order) were the chap who organised (and is organising) Bikes Alive, the bloke who I think writes the Cyclists in the City blog. I can't recall exactly who else was there, but all of them were interesting and had interesting points. One of the Candidates appeared (the independent lady who's been in the ES a couple of times). She vanished once we broke into smaller groups.

    The main thrust of the whole thing is that the difference between the main two candidates is around 20,000 votes at the moment. If 40,000 cyclists pledge to "vote with their bikes" cycling should become a big campaign issue.

    The main aim is to get the candidates to up their game on cycling safety, not by telling them what they should do, but by saying "whoever comes up with the best proposals gets our vote".

    They acknowledged that there are risks, if they fail to get enough people pledged, then the candidates know that they can safely ignore cycling, which will have a knock on effect on other cycling campaign groups, but, given the success of the cycling lobby in certain recent US cities, the other campaign groups seem to have taken a bit of a "if not now, when?" approach.

    The first thing discussed was an overall what do we know about the state of the race for mayor, what TFL's plans are, who to target, etc, etc.

    Then it broke down into smaller groups, focusing on Media Relations, Finances, the Website, Online Media and Offline media.

    Media Relations discussed what the "story" that was to be sold to the press was, why the campaign was important, and how best to get this across.

    Finances concentrated on how funding could be raised, and how much was needed.

    Website looked at what needed to be done to make the website look more professional, and easier to find.

    Online and Offline media (two separate groups) looked at how the message could be got out into the wider world, via both the internet and more traditional methods.

    There was also a a sheet for people to put down "Celebrities" that they knew, who might be contactable, and might be willing to support the campaign.

    This was then all fed back into a larger group session, and was taken away to organise/plan/expand on. I understand that details of this is due to be sent out shortly, and that the next meeting is on Monday 23rd at 7pm, after the Bikes Alive protest, in the Somers Town Coffee House.

    I'm happy to answer any questions on anything that I've not covered to the best of my ability!

  • Got a bike thing happening at my college on wednesday :) chuffed, and wondering if it's a London-wide uni thing or just RCA?

    WEDNESDAY 25th JANUARY : JAY MEWS

    DR Bike: 2 people from the DR Bike mechanics team will be coming along from 12-3pm in Jay Mews, Kensington to give your bikes a free health check and keep it on the road: no need to book just come with your bike.

    The Police will be coming along with a lorry from ***12-2 pm ***to run an Exchanging Places event where you can climb into the cab of a lorry and watch for a cyclist riding up the left side of the vehicle. You'll be surprised by just how little you can see from the driver's seat. You'll also learn more generally about how to cycle safely in London. The police marking team will also be in attendance and will offer security advice against theft.

  • Many London uni's do Dr Bike. I arrange it at Kingston Uni a few times a year.

    FYI - Next week is a national "Go Green Week" which most university's participate in. http://peopleandplanet.org/gogreenweek most university's will have one day during this week that is dedicated to promotion of sustainable travel. For example, at Kingston Uni I'm running Travel Light Tuesday next week - free breakfasts for all cyclists, free Dr Bike, bike charity sale, cycling races etc! Scoot, I don't know how active RCA are, but if you're interested in getting involved in projects like this i might be able to advise you... one of my many jobs ;)

  • ^^^ Oooooooooo lookit you ms. ave! I didn't realise you were such an organiser!

    RCA is pretty good with sustainability in general but other than this Dr Bike and police lorry thing I don't think it's done much related to cycling. Considering how many people cycle to college there's definitely an audience for it though.

  • The Times has launched a "Cities Fit for Cycling campaign" based around 8 points.

    1. Trucks entering a city centre should be required by law to fit censors, audible truck-turning alarms, extra mirrors and safety bars to stop cyclists being thrown under the wheels.
    2. The 500 most dangerous road junctions must be identified, redesigned or fitted with priority traffic lights for cyclists and Trixi mirrors that allow lorry drivers to see cyclists on their near-side.
    3. A national audit of cycling to find out how many people cycle in Britain and how cyclists are killed or injured should be held to underpin effective cycle safety.
    4. Two per cent of the Highways Agency budget should be earmarked for next generation cycle routes, providing £100 million a year towards world-class cycling infrastructure. Each year cities should be graded on the quality of cycling provision.
    5. The training of cyclists and drivers must improve and cycle safety should become a core part of the driving test.
    6. 20mph should become the default speed limit in residential areas where there are no cycle lanes.
    7. Businesses should be invited to sponsor cycleways and cycling super-highways, mirroring the Barclays-backed bicycle hire scheme in London.
    8. Every city, even those without an elected mayor, should appoint a cycling commissioner to push home reforms.
