  • I have found it incredibly easy to raise funding and establish an infrasructure to deploy this initiative at zero cost to any bike shop.

    Once legals are completed (only have verbal agreement in principle at the moment) I'll be posting details here.

    There are a few companies who are hated by cyclists and would like to give something back in return for raising their image too.

    Lets hope I get the final sig.

  • I'm bringing my argument right back round to the beginning now (sorry). I see more near misses caused by poor cycling every day during rush hour than caused by drivers, lorries or layout yet so little discussion is around improving the cyclist.

    The question you should be asking is why is there's poor cycling in the first place? what made them hug the kerbs, undertake HGV, jump red light, ride on pavement?

    I'll give a good example;

    notice the skid mark nearing a junction.

    The current infrastructure put them in such position, telling them that they should hug the kerbs, giving them the illusion that it's a perfectly safe manoeuvre, and undertaking vehicles is perfectly fine.

    The next question is, what can we do to help them realised that such manoeuvre isn't helping them? no matter how much campaigning we can do, the infrastructure tend to 'reset' most of the work LCC (amongst other) do.

    at least this is my 2 cents.

    (the picture is one of many I've taken to illustrate the danger of left hook/driver pulling out and putting the cyclists at risk).

  • +1 on your post edscoble, and that's quite a wide cycle lane as they go isn't it. It also makes it very difficult to teach good cycling.

    Cycle lanes get you past the queues and (I think) decrease the chances of being hit from behind between junctions but I'm not sure what can be done to their design at junctions. Widen them to 2m no matter what the overall road width?? IMHO this is the #1 infrastructure issue to solve.

  • I just had a very good experience in Lewisham Cycles in Lee Green (the old Youngs).

    It is company policy there to suggest free cycle training to anybody buying a new or second hand bike. This is what I want all bike shops to do.

    I listened in amazement as Marcus told two ladies that cycle training is free from their borough and very worth doing even as an experienced cyclist as they handed over their debit cards to pay for their bikes. Top stuff.

    Evans do this, or did when I bought my Plug last year.

    In other campaining news, a new group called "Londoners On Bikes" have formed to lobby/campaign for the cycling vote in London. Not really sure what they're about at the moment other than trying to get the cycling agenda on the mayoral agenda. http://lob.nationbuilder.com/ They're having a formative meeting on Friday afternoon in Westminster. I'm going to go and see what it's all about. Anyone else?

  • Ben Plowden (Director Surface Planning TfL) created a ruckus on various forums/egroups today after sending separate advisory emails to cyclists and drivers. See the following link http://t.co/EyhTZ8PB from which it can be seen that TfL actually sent out three separate e-mails – to cyclists, drivers and ? (other customers???).

    Did you receive an email? Do you think they are devisive or patronising?

    My feeling is just one email to everyone would have been better.

  • Yes. Lots of pearl-clutching on the part of cyclists I feel.

    TfL were clearly fools not to send out one blanket email. Aside from inclusivity it would have saved them time. But it's hardly the worst thing to happen, and cyclists are already (unfairly but predictably) lumbered with an image of being shrill and sancimonious.

    I get updates about the tube and busses, but I don't get any about cycling or driving emails. I have no idea why.

  • user setting perhaps? I mean if you never used it for cycling/driving, then I assumed you wouldn't be automatically be send an email regarding such thing, could be wrong thought.

  • One of the most important things to campaign for is permeability for cycling (maximum route, minimum diversion). It really hurts cycling if one-way streets are created, as that directly affects one of the greatest strengths of cycling, namely to facilitate local access. Here's some good news in that respect:

    These are 'only' little streets, but every little helps, and they will hopefully lead to more big one-way systems being returned to two-way operation.
