youve probably seen this?
replace Britains urban roundabouts with this?
http://www.protectedintersection.com/Good for US style grid layout roads but not so good for Britain's many undesigned, organic growth junctions.
As a test of this, show how the design would function at Elephant and Castle, a conjoined three road and five road roundabout pair. You will need to ensure that you don't compromise pedestrian space, protect reasonable access to three different forms of public transport, ensure non-congestive light phasing and retain the key visibility and safety features of the demonstration model and satisfy the interests of a broad variety of stakeholder groups including non-transport entities concerned with the preservation of green space, existing heritage structures and air quality.
If you can get anywhere close to that, you might just have something worth working with.
As a follow on, what would be your general position on roundabouts populated with things like memorials, art installations and other historic and heritage structures whose presence would be an inhibiting factor in the implementation of one of these protected intersections?

http://www.protectedintersection.com/What a messy idea. Looks also prone to crowding. The premise is that cyclists can never mix with car drivers so they show multi lane roads full of cars with little protected gullies for cyclists who have to make left turns (our right) the long way round.
If the aim is to get everyone cycling then the car drivers should have the single track gullies and have to wait for some strange light phasing while the rest of the lanes are given to cyclists (where to 80 year old grannies and 7 year old nippers can have their own slow lane)

Inconvenience motorists?! That's preposterous!

Armadillos are all the rage.

Animal Cruelty aside, using real Armadillos might be more effective?

He demands "the best". Which seems to be a mess of parallel transport networks for each different mode. The best for whom exactly ( yes I know, the 80 year old granny and 5 year old kids)

Not sure if this is the place, but great article on the rise of the killer automobile in the US.

Yes good place to post this. Thanks
“Common law tended to pin responsibility on the person operating the heavier or more dangerous vehicle, .... so there was a bias in favor of the pedestrian.” Since people on foot ruled the road, collisions weren’t a major issue: Streetcars and horse-drawn carriages yielded right of way to pedestrians and slowed to a human pace. The fastest traffic went around 10 to 12 miles per hour, and few vehicles even had the capacity to reach higher speeds.
Sounds like a plan...
Also interesting that the author of this succumbed to talking about this subject in an inhuman way attributing responsibility the the car rather than the driver
Cars had to pass this mid-point before turning left, preventing them from cutting corners and speeding recklessly into oncoming traffic
By the end of the 1920s, more than 200,000 Americans had been killed by automobiles.
(no they were killed by automobile drivers) -

yeah that was articulate
I just like to say wtf I like now,
since becoming freelance, i dont have to play the diplomacy game,
so always in the great meetings, just drop in some choice nuggets like
" Join the queue, if you drive"
" theres tons of rubbish paint on the roads, can we get rid of that shit before we build something aimed at making us look really really radical and up to date" -

URGENT
I need help with a call I've had from a client of mine. He's a cyclist but he's a bit clueless about this whole area tbh.
He's been comissioned to make a film for a haulage firm 'about cycle safety' [sic].
I need to show him the sumo suit film made by an instructor on here, can't find the link ... can some kind person help me locate it? I think the tone of it is really great.
Also, I need someone here / instructors thread to offer to review their work and make sure they don't TOTALLY F IT UP, I can just see them being all 'CYCLISTS! STAY OUT OF THE WAY OF LORRIES!! OR YOU WILL DIE!.
Can one of you lovely people offer to help? I have a mental workload and I want them to pitch this right but I just don't see a chance to help them this week. They're based in Soho so a quick visit may be in order to check out their proposal.
Thanks!
Ben

I've replied in your thread for this. If you're worried about it "being all 'CYCLISTS! STAY OUT OF THE WAY OF LORRIES!! OR YOU WILL DIE!." You could remind him that it's not going to be seen by cyclists so this message wouldn't work in any way.

There are a few haulage firms and bus companies looking to do things 'to help cyclists' at the mo. For different reasons -

Yes there is that element though there is also: "One of our drivers killed a person on a bike and we want to do all we can to prevent this happening again. What can we do? We need help and guidance'

Indeed. What. The. Fuck?
There already exist heaps of opportunities for cyclists to get a view from a lorry driver's perspective, including videos (was there a TfL one?). If they want to come out of this with any credibility the best thing they can do is to use the money to train their drivers and properly equip their LGVs.
I know this may not be of interest to your friend (since he's on commission to make the film), but what plans do they have to actually get this film seen by cyclists? How are they going to distribute it effecttively?
links to the twatter spat?
