  • sometimes your gold stoner

  • Change the gear to compensate for the crank length difference.

Go find what Sheldon says about Gain ratios.

Or don't as it's not a big enough difference to worry about.

    I'm on a Hija, 120 rear, 1.35 Duranos. 68 shell.

Changing the crank length doesn't do that much to the q factor. The main problem is that ex bb have a set width (and therfore 'q factor') unlike square taper. I would go 170 to help.

I've said it before but this is a nice little resource http://www.maxpowercycles.de/technical-stuff/

  • Changing crank length will do nothing for your Q factor... But you know that...

Track/BMX/Trials cranks will give you the tightest Q... Maybe road too...

  • You'll never be a true rotten apple TS.

  • Fat bike cranks give a great Q factor.

  • great (comparative greater, superlative greatest)
    Very big, large scale.

    Yes.

  • Are Kona Project 2 forks really heavy? Can't decide whether the benefit of a shorter wheelbase would be outweighed by their bulk...

  • Anyone know of an external bb crankset with a low q factor. I've seen Sram X5 but wondered if anyone had experience.

I currently have 175 alivio, 103bb, time pedals and still get pedal strike.

Euro bb, bmx race crank, cut down the spindle and cone spacers?

  • I still have those 130mm cranks if you want them! :)

  • 700c or 26"? I have a pair of 700c disc only ones, can weight them up for you if you wanna compare them with your other alternatives. They are for sale too!

  • Having major axle nut irritation here! Trying to find a set that will fit a 10mm BMX axle

I ordered a set of nuts that professed to be 10mm but when I they arrived the packet was labelled 3/8" !! They didn't fit :(

I checked the thread pitch of these 3/8" nuts using a 24tpi tap, which went through them fine. When I line up the tap and the axle side by side there are more teeth per inch on the axle, suggesting it is 26tpi.

So does anyone have some 10mm x 26tpi axle nuts I could try ?

Loads advertised online as 10mm but nowhere do they specify the thread pitch

  • just get a new axle from halfords, it'll come with nuts.

  • I think finding nuts to fit will be easier cos I'll have to repeat loads of messing about which I needed to do to get those bearings to be held tight. Used the cones (ground flat) in between the bearing races and the wheel nuts to hold them on the outside otherwise the bearings flopped about - probably the reason Matt overtightened it in the first place and wrecked it...

  • just get a new axle from your LBS, it'll come with nuts.

ftfy, you'll probably get better advice.

  • just get a new axle from halfords, it'll come with nuts.

Did you get the axle that is in that wheel now from Halfords?

  • I can't remember Stu, maybe. I did have a box of axles at one point, before the Great Tidy Up of Winter 2012.

  • Haha! OK, no worries, it looks similar to one on their website, I'll get one and have a go.

  • Just go to your LBS, they will most probably sort you out for a couple of quid and saves you the hassle of ordering the wrong nut again.

  • Yeah, go down with the wheel, any 10mm axle nut should fit, the only odd ones I've found with a different tpi are from certain coaster brake hubs.

Just noticed i've managed to crack the non-drive chainstay on my Milwaukee Bruiser, i've contacted Milwaukee to see if they'll do anything but i'm also wondering if its repairable, anyone got any experience of sorting this out..?

Can't afford to shell out for a new Bruiser right now, and i'd rather not have to change to a different type of frame......

  • I would say best not to do anything until Milwaukee has got back to you.

Also, I think Adam cracked the drive side chainstay of his pomp many moons ago and Ryan brazed on a gusset as a temp fix for it. Cambs Josh also had a similar problem with his and I think Lee welded on a shim of some sorts. Drop both of them a PM?

  • Yeah, not going to do anything til i hear from Milwaukee just wondering what the repair options were...

  • A new stay shouldn't cost too much... Sorry for your loss, Adam...

  • If it's steal it can be fixed. The question is cost, you should talk to Ryan direct, or any other frame builder... Is there one in Manchester?

I wouldn't be surprised if it costs as much as £100.

I had exactly the same problem, lee just drilled and welded it, took him all of 5 minutes. is a simple fix, but not a long lasting one...saying that i used it for another year after lee welded it.

Lee has moved to Canada now though, so not around to do it.
