for a simpleton like meself who's shite at gear alignment, would gears need re-alining after rd has been removed, packed and re-assembled?

It should be fine. You will leave cable attached so nothing could change.
Handlers have a habit of dropping the bag and I have had one or two chainrings bent. I started removing them as well but later made an alloy sub-frame which sat in the bottom of the bag. Had short verticals into which the ends were bolted. This just held rings clear of bottom, it only works with a small frame in a decent sized bag,

I've been looking at 'coffin' style cases, like flight cases for decks, padded inside and robust, deposit down then around 3 euros per day

what's the score re. jerseys?
-

Most people manage to get a wool jersey somewhere - they pop up at jumbles and on this forum. What bike you taking? We have a dark green 1957 Cinelli Corsa (mine) and either a dark green Carpenter or a dark blue and chrome Flying Scot (Mrs I). See you there.

I've got one of these - http://www.groundeffect.co.nz/product-detail-TAR-BAG.htm
which is great, just requires a bit of dis-assembly/re-assembly. I found larger wheelie bag too unwieldy.
Saw last year a bike bag at L'eroica with internal dropout spacers, you simply took the wheels off, dropped it in, wheels went in pockets either side. really want one, but cant remember the manufacturer. if anyone does, let me know.

Having discussed some possible training rides with saarf, the idea popped up in my head that I could draw up some nice route plans that we could ride on our vintage steel horses in July, August & September, so as to get used to doing 135 - 200km rides with plenty of nasty climbs...
Being a Dutchy, this will have to be in the south of the Netherlands (Limburg, where the World Championships will be held), the Belgian Voerstreek area and of course The Ardennes.
I was thinking of starting out with a gentle 135km/2200 vertical m and end with a 200km/4000 vertical m in mid September a couple of weeks before l'Eroica.
So, besides saarf and me, are there any lfgss l'Eroica-goers that live within travelling distance of this neighborhood or would want to come this way and fancy a thing like this? Let me know!

at risk of public ridicule,
my wool jersey, got for cheap on ebay.it
feels like a hair shirt, not too sure if I'm into self flagellation for 210 km in 30 degrees -

there is also someone on ebay who sells reproduced vintage tops out of modern material, which might
be a better shout. -

We haven't finalised the details yet but we'll probably be in an estate car with two bikes and full camping gear so will probs have little room free. If we do have space though I'll be sure to post it in here.

I was surprised to find the distance from Harwich to Gaiole was nearly identical to the channel ports. It helps if you live in East Anglia.

OK let's try to arrange some dates then for the l'Eroica training rides in Limburg and the Ardennes, for the 'mainland riders' who want to test their steel rides (& legs)...
How about:
July 14 or 15th - Limburg, NL: about 130km (elevation 2000+m)
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/179127545August 18th or 19th - Ardennes, B: 150km (elevation 3000m)
(still to find/test a nice one, I'll have a look at GPSies.com but maybe you guys have some suggestions?)
