  • Well i'm working till six on that day, but I'm sure I'll be able to meet you in the pub after. :)

  • Anyone in need of an idea for rest/amazing food/drinks/fireworks after the ride -

    Should be a good'un. Display starts at 8, drinking/eating starting at 5ish

  • I might be up for this. Just how cheeky are these hills? I managed the St. Margaret's ride fixed, but wouldn't really fancy anything much steeper (hills were 20% I think). Also, I heard OLC will be giving guided tours of his alma mater!

My suggestion is that if you are unsure or uncomfortable with going single or fixed, bring the gears. The critical thing is that people turn up on time, and enjoy the ride. If fixed will make it a tough but manageable challenge, all well and good. However, if you are uneasy, then take the sensible option and enjoy the trip.

We are waiting for everyone on this ride, so charging up the hills on your Colnago 22 speed like Marco Pantani, will only mean you have longer to wait for the wheezing old duffers at the back on their "ye olde worlde "single speeds.

As to OLC's proclivities, this is something I really should not comment upon...

  • I don't think Amygdala is doubting his fixed hill climbing prowess, I've seen it...

It would be good to see a route/gradient profile/have some idea of the percentages involved so that those of us who can reasonably comfortably ride a ride like St Margarets (c.90 miles and 4000ft of climbing including 20%+ hills, some of which were very challenging) fixed can make a decision on fixed v. gears.

On that basis, you people will be more than comfortable with fixed. It is a social ride, following our noses, enjoying the countryside, gulping down a few pints beside Herford College, and meeting with some family and forum colleagues based in Oxford. It is not a time trial, or otherwise competitive event.

If you can find the Garmin co-ordinates in Gullivers Travels, I will be happy to add them to the thread.

    (my feeble attempt at satire)

  • Whatever happened to throwing caution to the wind and just taking whichever bike looks prettiest on the morning of the ride? Sigh.

  • You've seen both my bikes - If I did that I'd never be on gears ;)

Thanks Bernie, that sounds good to me and Garmin co-ordinates can >>>>>>

    ;)

Very happy with chap nav and a vague idea, will plan to be on fixed, unless my Colnago bats its eyelashes at me on the Saturday morning...

I like the ride title by the way. Will there be tiny people?

Good man. I tend to rely on Chav Nav, given that I live near Croydon, and it will be great to have you along.

Watch out for the sultry tones of Ernesto's finest the morning of the ride. It is not surprising how many times my C4O as beguiled me away from fixed.

In terms of which chapter of the book we are re-creating, I am thinking we are the little people travelling to see the intellectual giants of Oxford. Who will be more disappointed by the encounter, only time will tell.

Thanks Bernie, looks like I should be free to do this, fixed. I must confess I am yet to read Gulliver's Travels, but I have seen the mid-nineties TV adaptation with Ted Danson. That counts, right?

I suppose there's still time to read the book before the ride, but I'm not a particularly "swift" reader. (Can't do satire, will stick to asinine puns).

  • One week to go bump!

Very excited about this ride. I'm looking to procure some poetic highlights.

  • This looks ike fun.

  • Good evening,
I shall be attending this, as it is a good excuse to get the pretty Mercian out to play.

I may also have persuaded some people I don't know to join us...the joys of cycling.

  • Right, trying to get organised up here in the north/oxfordfordinghamshire. Dan @ cycleox bike Coop should have lockage and some locals with fixed pitch forks and flaming torches will be at the turf. [small children waving banners and 'welcome LFGSS' pennants available for a small fee]

    FOB

    "Welcome to Oxford".... gulp.

(Joking aside, thanks for organising the lockage. First pint will be courtesy of the travellers.)

Betty, are they known unknowns, or unknown unknowns, in the words of Dick Cheney?

  • Morning guys,

I'm really sorry but I now can't make this :-(

    Good luck!

  • Took the tractor wheels off last night in preparation for this - don't fancy hill climbing with heavy ass marathon plusses on

  • Betty, are they known unknowns, or unknown unknowns, in the words of Dick Cheney?

Unknown unknowns...They wanted to go on a weekend ride with the company I work for, but there are non, so I sent a link to this ride and thought 'the more the merrier!' so hopefully they wont get too scared by the threat of pitchforks at noon...

  • Betty - great to have you on board

    Yas - get involved

FOB - is that Dan H of OCW? either way good to hear and i shall leave the anchor at home then :)

  • Took the tractor wheels off last night in preparation for this - don't fancy hill climbing with heavy ass marathon plusses on

nothing wrong with marathon plus for hill climbing!

  • nothing wrong with marathon plus for hill climbing!

Come along and show us, young man. We have a gap at 8 for a willing volunteer.

  • nothing wrong with marathon plus for hill climbing!

    They're nearly a kilogram each!

And yeah, stick your name down at 8

  • Too be fair mine have been on for a year so I don't even notice them. Anyone planning to ride to the start point?

  • Tempted by the ride out - haven't run the numbers on how early that'd mean leaving though.
