This was my problem til recently. Was hammering myself on my commute from Woodford to Westminster every day and wondering why i wasn't losing any weight (wasn't helped by the fact that when i got to work, 'cause id hammered myself i'd need carbs) and wasn't getting any fitter (well my commute was getting a little quicker but not much).
Have looked into it in more detail, got a HR monitor (well a Garmin) and have done some long slow/steady rides keeping my HR below 80% of max. Feels weird not really being out of breath much but has made such a difference. Recently did a 70 mile loop out to Stanstead and back which was hard but didn't have cravings to stuff myself with carbs after as went pretty slow (only had a nutri grain bar while i was out). Burnt 2600 calories...
Even though I've only been doing them for a couple of weeks, doing long slow rides has done more for my fitness than anything I've done in the past 18 months, did my regular 35 mile loop 20 minutes quicker today than when i first did it 3 weeks ago while maintaining the same approx HR, plus I'm definitely losing weight. Getting a geared bike made a difference too as meant i could keep my HR down and more controlled....
I feel like I just woke up after a long nap ...

Hmm are there any heart monitor and all that junk that work with Android ? I don't really want to fork out for another device.
How often do you do these rides ? I have a geared bike, but it's gathered dust tbh

Can get a basic one for about £30 i think. Now ive been using it for a while i can judge my hr on my breathing (have a look at relative exertion scales or something which how things were done before monitors).
Main thing is, if youre getting out of breath slow down. Should be able to hold a conversation. Felt weird at first not pushing myself harder though.
Ive got dodgy knees from previous surgerys so if i push too hard i get sore knees for a few days so this is perfect for me!
Now i know this is working for me im doing a 35 mile loop a couple of times per week if i can, or if i cant because of work i will do a longer ride, say 60-70 miles.
I know the distances sound daunting at first but once you start you soon get more confidence to push the miles up and lots of info outnthere says thismis the sort of training/ rides that build up base fitness and uses fat more.

sorry, not sure if you read all of my post.
I'm carrying an injury. 30 miles in a day, even with numerous stops, is not advisable at present.
I have been told to build things up slowly.Sorry Shoosh, didnt see that. No, i had lots of injurys in the past and definitely worth taking time getting back. Ps PM coming soon

As I've mentioned to a few people in person, on Sunday 12th August I'm aiming to ride out from the Whipps Cross Roundabout to the tea hut at High Beach (and then back, unless someone has a support car!)
The weather looks good mixture of sunshine and clouds, but if the forecast changes to rain I'm not going to risk a repetition of last week, when I got caught in the hailstorm.
You are welcome to join me, but be wary we will be going at my unfit pace, and might have to pause for 2 mins once or twice on the way. This would be a good starting ride for anyone who wants to build up their fitness and feel safe in the company that they are with someone who can't do too much.
If you're interested let me know. I'm leaving from Whipps Cross Roundabout (by the bus stop/bench) at 10am.

Great stuff, Shoosh, I didn't realise you'd already built up to that distance. Have a superb ride!

Thanks Oliver, as you know it has taken me a very long time to get here, but finding short flat rides, with long coffee stops, alternated with gym visits, has certainly helped move me a long.

Hi Shoosh. Long time no speak. If I didn't already have an appointment I'd have joined you.
Hope it goes well.

This is why people in the army sing when they run, it stops you over exerting yourself. You can also try whistling while cycling or only nose breathing.

Have noticed the Wanstead Festival is on tomorrow, so am likely to divert there on the return journey. Meant to be all sorts of food stalls, etc.

Southwark Cyclists do short (2 hour), sociable, local explores most Saturdays, usually with a Dr Bike on hand at the start.
More hereAlso this tomorrow:
Where: Locks, Docks and a Bankside Boozer
When: Sunday 12 August 2012
Meet: 10:00 @ Cutty Sark Gardens, SE10 9LW (by the foot tunnel entrance)Brought to you by LCC's South East London Commissariat for Social Cycle Rides Planning (aka the Dog & Bell Crew), a leisurely and for at least some of its participants hangover recovery tour of London's locks and docks, with one or more ale houses thrown in for hair-of-the-dog good measure.
The round London widdershins route will in large part follow that of Barry Mason's world famous Locks, Docks and One Smoking Ferry ride. Starting at Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich, there will a coffee break at Woolwich Arsenal, a lunch stop at Fat Boy's Diner on Trinity Buoy Wharf, and a short extension into the City of London, where we will cross the River Thames for the second time via the Wobbly Bridge. Following liquid refreshment in the Founders Arms pub on Bankside, we will then head east toward Tower Bridge, and join the Thames Path southside at Butler's Wharf.
The ride could if we feel like it end with a second lubrication stop at the Dog & Bell in Deptford.
RSVP, but it's OK to turn up unannounced on the day.
Led by Francis Sedgemore who is on here.

Hi All, so glad to find this thread. If you know of any rides organised (I can do a 40/45 miles max) please let me know. I need to get rid of as much blubber as possible =)
Those interested in regular sunday morning rides into Essex should PM me - I d imagine that these won't happen now till the 1st week of September, but I ll check my whereabouts for the rest of the month
Shoosh, my idea is that the ride would always go via the tea hut
That way beginners can work out if it's the ride for them or just start to get used to riding in a group.
Might be riding out this Sunday, though I also want to go to the Bouncy Stonhenge in Leyton..
