even though i do 60 - 100 hilly miles in the summer months.. i only consider myself reasonably fit, certainly not fast on the flat or uphill, and my weight still fluctuates between 70 - 85 kgs..
That's a 2 and a bit stone fluctuation. Is it seasonal?

OK, so who would be interested in meeting up for a few leisurely laps of Hyde Park before a nice cup of tea? Ideally once a week at weekends say a Saturday or Sunday morning but let's start with a one-off and see how it goes.
Date for the first meet will be settled once we have a few people interested but I'm thinking end of the month Sat 28th Jan or Sun 29th meet up at 10am at Speaker's Corner:

Up for that on either day, weather dependent.
Getting started early in the year might be good for building up to a longer fat boys/girls ride later on.

Ooh, I'm up for this. Sundays work best for me but could be persuaded to do a Saturday instead.

Sounds like a plan, if everyone is a bit smaller and a bit faster each meeting it should be good motivation.

I wish I was more west. I'll be tired by the time I get to the Hyde Park.

I was thinking the same. Do you want to do a comparable ride around Viccy Park?

OK, this is coming up. Any more want to join in? It's going to be relaxed, emphasis is on enjoying cycling in the park rather than personal best times or remaining within the fat burning zone according to your heart rate monitor.
Let's make it Saturday 28th (sorry bothwell but do join us) meet at 10am at Speaker's Corner. Shoosh and EEI try to make it if you can, I'll be there a little bit before so you can always get there 15 mins early then have a breather.

Sorry, work gets in the way this saturday. Have a good ride though.

OK, so at the moment it's me and bothwell. Hmmm.

Not me either - I'm also on the girls' Ingatestone ride the same day. Why not come along with us, VU? This is the route: http://www.bikemap.net/route/279148#lt=51.80352&ln=0.33714&z=11&t=0
It's not very bumpy at all so it's a good longer ride for tubsters like me who don't get out often enough :-)

Thanks for the link except I can't figure it out that well. Looks like I'd have to take the bike out of London on a train somewhere into Essex before getting to the starting point for the ride?

Giving this thread a bump. Any short rides coming up?
-
• #194
I'd be up for some as well.. really need to get longer rides than the mad stop-start dash to work. Sure I can do 100mtr between traffic lights very fast, but anything sustained over 10 miles kills me

Shoosh, Kirth - more than happy to organise some shortish/slow/flat rides with healthy food spot thrown in near the end.
Train out somewhere, 30-40 mile loop over 3 or 4 hours, somewhere in't countryside?

This was my problem til recently. Was hammering myself on my commute from Woodford to Westminster every day and wondering why i wasn't losing any weight (wasn't helped by the fact that when i got to work, 'cause id hammered myself i'd need carbs) and wasn't getting any fitter (well my commute was getting a little quicker but not much).
Have looked into it in more detail, got a HR monitor (well a Garmin) and have done some long slow/steady rides keeping my HR below 80% of max. Feels weird not really being out of breath much but has made such a difference. Recently did a 70 mile loop out to Stanstead and back which was hard but didn't have cravings to stuff myself with carbs after as went pretty slow (only had a nutri grain bar while i was out). Burnt 2600 calories...
Even though I've only been doing them for a couple of weeks, doing long slow rides has done more for my fitness than anything I've done in the past 18 months, did my regular 35 mile loop 20 minutes quicker today than when i first did it 3 weeks ago while maintaining the same approx HR, plus I'm definitely losing weight. Getting a geared bike made a difference too as meant i could keep my HR down and more controlled....

Not sure I'm up to 30-40 miles!
Something less than 10 at the moment would be good! Working up to 20.
I'm carrying an injury so have to build up slowly, otherwise I would really take a chance and push too hard. -
• #198
Well you can make a day out of 30 miles with 3 30min-1hr stops at interesting locations or food/drink stops. Just have to think of where... pretty sure I've got just the place, but need to test a route or tew
-
• #199
sorry, not sure if you read all of my post.
I'm carrying an injury. 30 miles in a day, even with numerous stops, is not advisable at present.
I have been told to build things up slowly. -
• #200
Shoosh, I'm happy to keep you company on shorter rides
Rowan, 20->30miles to start would be perfect for my fitness
