Inspired by this thread, I had fish and chips for dinnerer last night. Fucking horrible.
The fish was wet and flavourless, had fuckloads of batter all over it and it was fried within an inch of its life.

Putneys finest has the best fish (portion, selection and portion size) fresh chips, home made coleslaw, mushy peas mayonaise etc and all perfectly cooked, there also a BYO eat in optionBear in mind i grew up in the business i rarely give out praise, £8 fish and chips easily feeds me and Sof
+1 to Fishers - eating in is great, taking away depends on far you have to go. (Soggy chips problem.)
As for the £3.50 argument, around Leeds and Bradford that is still the going rate for a decent piece of fish and great chips. I remember still getting newspaper wrapping maybe until about 10 years ago, from the local near my aunt's house. In London that hasn't happened in even longer.
Leeds was the home of Harry Ramsden, the original resturant is still there. Not been to in like 10 years either. (Of course it ain't £3.50 there more like a tenner.) Can't say if it good or not, but it probably worth a mention.

I went in this hood chip chop up in Oxgangs (Edinburgh) the other night. They'll deep fry whatever you want and when you ask for a battered sausage you get three in return. It ticks all of the boxes on my checklist for sure

Traditional Plaice on Leather lane is really good. Only problem is its only open Monday to Friday till about 7. I used to go there when I worked in Hatton Garden.
Good but a bit more pricey is the Golden Hind just off Marylebone High St.

nah golden hind isn't all that good any more
we did a company lunch from there recently chips poor fish wet soggy
we moved on to the golden union and everybody says it's 100% better than the hind. -

A few Harry Ramsdens managed to get in The Times top 50 fish and chips shops list last year I think. The one in Scarborough most notably.
I had a cracking plate of fish and chips on Whitecross St a couple of weeks back. Cheap as, well, chips.

How does everyone feel about chips in boxes? Noticed that all the chip shops (like seaside ones) that are supposed to be good have started doing it. Personally they drive me crazy, cant stand em. Either in paper or on a plate for me. Boxes are for pizza!

^Yes!
Plus the place on Berwick street Soho.
Glad to hear that it is good...will pay it a visit soon. Hopefully before the railings are removed from outside because bike parking is a little scarce around there.
I wish the Berwick St place would open a little later. I often could do with a fish supper mid session.

Went to a killer place in Mousehole, Cornwall, this tiny little village in the middle of nowhere. There's a chip shop there which opens Weds lunchtimes and Friday nights between 6-9 pm, has loads of old books in the window, and they only sell locally sourced fish and what have you. Epic delicious greasy tasty (in a good way) deliciousness. Nom.

Reminds me, Fishers has reopened after the fire they had.
(Can't help with Brighton, sorry)
Absolutely they do. In european farming environment they will eat each others shit.
But in the wild, or where raised in and around rural villages in Asia etc, they run around searching for Human poo in particular and gobble it all up.
My sister actually experienced a latrine in India, where Pigs lived in the pit below WAITING for the poo.
