  • Compeed on the blisters and gaffer over the top

  • Also a good call.

  • In Colorado recently I arrested my travel via an ablative technique, which resulted in a fairly large area of raw skin.

I used suitably sized adhesive clear plastic dressing, then an adhesive bandage to wrap around the dressing to hold it on. The plastic layer sealed the wound, with the bandage providing a bit of structure.

A smaller version of that maybe? Gaffer could replace the adhesive bandage if you prefer.

  • I licked my cat's frontline treatment by mistake. How long do I have?

  • How long ago did you type that?

    (Checks)

    Damn. Poor bugger.

  • Also, how/why?????

  • Can't type, frothing.

  • Picked up a metal pan that had been in a 240 degree oven without a towel/other because I’m tired/careless. Had enough sense to put it down carefully on hob rather than spill hot oil over my bare feet but by the time I released it had fused onto my left hand. Thankfully I wank with my right.

  • anyone ever suffered a thigh/quadricep contusion?
I crashed on my downhill bike 10 days ago, going pretty fast and my thigh hit a tree taking the brunt of the impact.
I went to the minor injuries unit as I couldn't bend my knee past 45 degrees without excruciating pain. I was basically sent home and told to rest and ice it. After a couple days it started to feel a bit better to the point I could walk around the house with a limp without too much pain if I took it slow.

But after it starting to feel like it was getting better the past 3 days its been more painful with a burning pain at the sides of my knee and up and down the back of my leg. I'm slightly concerned by the burning pain thats started as that wasnt happening to begin with.

I was told this type of injury is common in sports especially skiing with folk hitting trees. At hospital the nurse said it would be "a couple of weeks" for it to heal but 10 days later it doesn't actually feel all that much better than to begin with.

It's starting to get me down not being able to get out cycling or do much else really. I'm wondering if I should be asking my gp about physio. I'm a wee bit concerned this could be something that affects my cycling long term.

Has anyone else ever suffered a hard impact injury like this to the thigh? What was your experience/recovery time?

  • not a doctor
could it be compartment syndrome? Probably not though.
do you know any drs you can chat with, or can you call your GP if you're worried?

  • Hey dude, appreciate you replying.
I also wondered this after a bit of googling. I really hope its not as it sounds like its quite serious if not sorted quickly!
The burning pain subsides when I keep still with an ice pack on and comes back when I start moving. So that makes me think its unlikely compartment syndrome.
I'm going to call my GP in the morning and just explain the fact its a different pain now and hopefully they can put my mind at rest.

Sounds like a plan. At very least will put your mind at ease.

  • Seem to remember @dancing james having a nasty case of compartment syndrome years ago...

Might be worth seeing if it was a similar feeling he had.

  • Visit GP or A&E

If leg goes numb it’s ambulance time. Almost killed me

  • Theres no numbness or tingling thankfully. I'll be speaking to GP in the morning.

Doctor Google seems to say some injuries like this can take 4-6 weeks to heal, so maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit since I'm 10 days in.

Its only now that I cant get out on my bike I realise just how much I need it...

  • I dont think many people realise how bad bruising can get. Can totally understand why you are concerned. Definitely talk to your GP though. That was you can stop worrying and heal up.

  • I found a infra red heat lamp helped me after busting my shoulder . The person thats pays the bills may not be so sympathetic but it really speeded up the recovery .

  • Mine was a bleed into a muscle compartment, until it got so swollen the blood couldn’t flow and then muscle and nerves started to go necrotic.

Compounded by a visit to a doctor in a&e who said it was just an infected bruise, not to worry and just take more ibuprofen.

Until the leg went numb and I was told to remain as still as possible and wait for ambulance before being rushed to hospital. After the first operation I was told I might need the leg amputated.

  • I did something similar a couple of years ago, landed on a partially buried tree trunk and my thigh took the bulk of the impact. I could cycle, but walking was much more difficult.

I had a major race two weeks afterwards, which I rode, but I had lingering issues for another two weeks after that, so almost a month to properly recover.

  • Ha ironically there isn't a single bruise on my leg

  • Jesus.
I went to the minor injuries unit and to be honest they seemed to be keen just to get me back out and home again as quickly as possible.
But I'm of course I'm too polite and didnt want them to think that I know better or anything.

@andyp ah interesting that you could cycle but walking was difficult. This happened at the innerleithen trails, when my knee would come to the top of the peddle stroke I could feel that something wasn't right, felt like a tennis ball was stuck inside my leg and trying to pop out. Had to freewheel back down the fire road then cried in the car for a wee while...

I just feel that 10 days after it, I'd have been a bit further along the recovery road!
Hopefully the GP will take my moaning on board in the morning

  • Hit by a car turning left without checking. Handlebar met leg. Apologised profusely to the driver and attempted to walk it off. Flatmate called an ambulance after my leg grew a lump the size of my head. Couple of weeks on crutches, absurd swelling, amazing colours, lots of pain, and I have a dent in my thigh & weakness 10 years later.

  • Pretty minor, but does anyone else get little spots on the inside of their nostrils? Any cures?

This is something that's only started happening in the last year or so. It's not a massive issue, but saw the thread and thought I'd ask.

    Just an old age thing?

  • Viral?

  • I don't think so. They are literally just like spots or pimples. Usually only one. Maybe a bit more tender but that's probably the location.
