  • Times are changing, retrofit is good for the caring corporate brand these days. Even in Canary wharf - structure retained, reclad, I think a couple of new floors on top. https://www.bgy.co.uk/commissions/yy-london

  • Can anyone find these lamps in the UK, my google fu is failing me

  • Faro Pepper

very close thanks, I did really want the Raw alu one, but if i cant it that could work.

  • Oh i saw them on the US amazon, i wonder if its just someone selling from their and increasing the price to include 'free' postage from the US. It has the US plug. should be easy enough to rewire though hmmm

  • ah yep, think you’re right - 2 to 3 week delivery estimate and all the reviews coming up in the states :/

  • IKEA + caustic soda?

  • I just used Amazon.com and ordered them, £32 shipped for two and I'll just rewire them when they come.

  • Next question is interior door knobs, just had all the doors replaced; all the old doors (see below) had quite nice door knobs, which were sadly knackered after 50 years of use. Not to mention that a strong sneeze could have broken the door down, they're super flimsy.

We're currently thinking about having non turning knobs and roller catches. Does anyone please have any suggestions for a good place to scouce the knobs? It seems most places I found do Victorian to 30's style or bright modern stainless door hardware but our house is 1969.

  • You could try plank hardware, Clemo and finch or buster & punch. don’t know specially by style, but they are good quality.

  • @Sheppz had some good recommendations when I was hunting but I’ve totally forgot what they were.

  • My place is 60s too - era do a knob pretty similar - zoo hardware also have options. Nickel is a warmer finish than SS if you can get it. Poole & Waite in Farringdon is a trade place that can source stuff. Mid cent is tricky for things like handles I find / as you say - most affordable options skew to Victorian / 30s or made up ‘modern’ horrificness. IZE - do super fancy architect designed stuff.

  • What replacement doors have you gone for? My house should have the ones in your picture but were replaced by even thinner 6 panel things which I'm looking to change.

  • I did find a UK supplier for the Jasper Morrison FSB knob. Much cheaper if you can get someone to re-post from Germany though.

Natural aluminium is right on point for 60/70s

  • The fsb 1106 series by mäckler would suit too imo

  • They do a relatively affordable anodised faux bronze or faux brass too. Although the brass is very shiny. Fsb is the golden standard in 'ere Germany, can't go wrong.

  • currently thinking about having non turning knobs and roller catches

If you would be OK with brass, then check on aliexpress.

We got brass door handles when we were pimping our DUKTIG play kitchen. There were tonnes of options. Being brass you don't have to worry about the finish as much. I'd be a bit more wary about plated finishes as you don't know what the quality will be like.

  • Some people may have reactions to nickel, otherwise I much prefer it to stainless.

  • Many thanks for all the help everyone, loads of options I think @dbr has nailed it with that knob, you are right, the original were were aluminum. Im going to ask a friend in Germany if we can get them posted, but they're still suprisingly affordable from that UK supplier.

    @snowy_again
We wanted to try and keep the doors accurate to the period of the house, having something more solid and soundproof. You couild hear a mouse fart through the old ones, I cant emphaise how shit they are.
The easiest way of getting solid flush doors I could think of was getting firedoors as they're solid core. They are 44mm instead of the orignal 36mm so we had to move and replace all the door stops, but we needed to that anyway as all of the orignals were really very wonky, only 1 would close properly.
We were all set on getting these Sapele ones:

When we realised that actually we didnt like how dark the orignal ones are (the one in the above photo is much darker that IRL, and it was probably the lightest of the bunch). In areas like the landing, where there isnt much natural light atm, were made worse by having such dark doors, as such we went for something a bit cheaper, specifically these.

That way if we want too we can paint the sides that face the landing white without feeling guilty about paitning over sapele, and if not they are much lighter anyway:

And if we just varnish they they'll look ok too (see this one I wetted out with a bit of isoprop to bring out the colour of the wood), not sure what the wood is though, nothing fancy at any rate.

Sound wise they are so so so much better, with two of us WFH in a small house its made a massive difference.

  • last time I try and help u

  • Oh lol sorry pal, I did see your post thank you!

  • Great, much appreciated!

  • RE: My lamp post above. I ended up just ordering two for £32 posted from Amazon US. No customs and came in a week. Then added some Philips LED filament style bulbs and some fused plug adapters like this:

    Im really pleased with them
