Yeah, it felt as if they (Kevin etc) were selling it as a success overall as the building was completed, but the Euphoria CD man has nothing to show for it - had to sell and lost his wife/family/life in the process.
Also a truly awful carbuncle of a building.

Celebrating the output when the outcome was beyond horrible.

Spoken like a true UXer, so spot on.

I see it a lot

If only he'd just slapped some new grey windows in the original house.
-
• #4707
They were new windows! He replaced all the old ones 🫣

I bet he just did the glazed units not frames due to the cost, think 200k was mentioned!?

It did sell for a good price so not all was lost.
I guess they won't say whether he was up or down.
I was trying to work out his occupation.
Apart from borrowing. 😁

I'm not going to watch it again, but total cost of build and asking prices for both buildings were given. IF asking prices were met, it was quite a profit iirc.
-
• #4712
Build was about £6M, asking was about £10M
If it's as simple as that then a profit, but no mention of whether that includes interest on loans etc., or what £6M invested just about anywhere else would have yielded over the course of 10 years.
At least it's done... -

Can’t imagine they’ll get 10 fat ones? Its horrible
-
• #4715
They bought the house for £1.5m
As far as I can tell they borrowed everything - 8% interest was mentioned. £6m + interest + £1.5m - agent fees, 10 years of rent etc then it doesn’t strike me as much profit
-
• #4716
Ah maybe you’re right

Either that or drakes new place on London fields, both done in terrible taste.
-
• #4718
Yep. And obviously he still needs somewhere to live after this. It’s very unlikely there’s profit considering how borrowed up he was, he ended up essentially only owning a share in the building with his investors. If there is profit it’s very minimal considering 10 years of strife. It was a disaster.

£10m is about £1 for every poor detail, cheap finish and clunky junction in that thing. Such a missed opportunity.
-
• #4720
If they’d just mildly re-done the original gaff they’d probably have cleared £3-4m in profit anyway given what the land was worth

This is the thing. They could have easily been financially and architecturally successful with that budget and location. Euphoria CD man sunk his ship with 2 catastrophic decisions - the ridiculous suspended car ramp and the mad flying foundations, both things were unnecessary and elevated the build from being premium to ruinous, and for what?

Any suggestions for this?
I have these light shades we had in our old place. They have long metal hooks that hang from the ceiling but our new place has much lower ceilings. I'm looking for a fitting/ part to suspend the glass part. They are pretty heavy.

I could cut the metal rod and rethread it I guess. Any other thoughts appreciated.

Are both ends threaded? We had a lamp with a similar construction that was easy to cut in the non threaded end
-
• #4725
Yes both threaded
I watched the lighthouse episode last night too.
couple things struck me, one was how interesting the other house was he built on the site which felt far more inviting than the visitor centre built next to it and the windows looked chunky and dated as the build took so long, i’m sure if it was built today the frames would be slimmer and still be up to coastal conditions.
the place lacked any intrinsic aesthetic quality but will no doubt make a footballer or tech wizard happy for a bit.
