Can we figure out a system for the draft? What do they do in N America when drafting high-school / college players?

Ok, so that doesn't work in this case.

John H said he'd choose a random order (i.e. which captains pick first) - so it might be me, spoons, max, chukker, jono, bill, then reverse it every other turn. So Bill picks last first, and then in the next round of draft, picks first, and in the third round, he'd be last again. Also, it's to be done on a google doc, only visible to captains.

Yeah "fair" drafting goes:

Captain one: 1st and 8th choice
Captain two: 2nd and 7th choice
Captain three: 3rd and 6th choice
Captain four: 4th and 5th choice

It affects your strategy depending when you pick, but you each get a fair value of your players (system works best when drafting to a multiple of (number of captains times two), so for 4 captains it would be a multiple of 8, etc.

Absolutely no fucking way. If it is, not only will I not captain, I will not play at all. Would you want to be the last person picked?

Theoretically, reversing the order of draft each time yields a more equitable range of teams, yet as a system its utility is affected by friends picking friends, equally ranked players, bad choices etc etc. So in theory it's the best way, but going in order works too.

As far as seeding the captains goes, it's an idea - could be executed by disallowing an A picking an A for their first pick. But I'm not bothered either way.

I have no idea. The ABC rankings? I don't think it matters, tbh. It's supposed to be a fun event, and bench minors tend to demonstrate that a team of defensive Bs can win over a team over superstar As.
