You got my countdown perfect Andy... I think it was Dommy you forgot about.
And my time wasn't half bad, thankyou very much! -

The guys with the digital timing stuff seemed pleased that we were getting people away pretty close to the minute as it helped them to spot any anomolies (eg people getting close to the mat with 30 seconds to go and triggering their chip).
One every 30 is fine for the starters, it will need some discipline in lining people up so they do not miss their gate and have enough time to settle before we send them off.
The tdf style countdown is important to get riders into the zone and fire themselvesup. There were some pretty nervous people and a start when ready call might not get people exploding out of the gate with the same dramatic effect (skidding on the mat, pulling their feet out of their pedals, pulling their wheel out of alignment so it jams against the frame etc...). Saying that a few people went on 1 and Andy had a look of death on his face despite knowing how little it mattered because of chip timing.
I was thinking next year can we have a gun?

I loved the countdown. It was excellent. Really helped to focus myself on the line (Didn't know what I was doing and I was all over the place, but once the count got to 5 everything lined up).
Should have passed appreciation and thanks on to Andy earlier. Thanks! -

"Oh fuck, sorry, 765...4.....3.....2.....1"
To be fair the the sheepish "sorry!" as I rode off made me chuckle.
Next year you need to do the full 5 finger countdown and say it in French for maximum effect.

You'd only end up with a finger in your nose. :)

really need a hand held unit, that can do 4 one second pips and a buzz.. for great pro start with finger count.
could be a nice electronic project for someone.

I thought you had someone holding riders upright so they can be clipped in.
A strong hand is all that's needed to stop people leaving early.

Just reading that gets my heart beating/adrenaline dumping. Need to work on that irrational fear of organised cycling events. Nice write up though. Didn't know you'd got an early recce in...

Please accept my sincere apologies for my momentary lapse in concentration.
I did the five finger countdown last year, but, much to stelle's disappointment, didn't do it this year.

If a sheepish sorry made you chuckle I wonder how you would have reacted to a "go on love".

• #291
Or a "go on duck".

Bloody useless. Only reason I wasn't riding.

I still don't think I was being sexist... all the bitches love it when I say stuff like that...
Another great event by the way. I'm more than happy to help out again next year. Riders going every 30 seconds is going to be nuts. Imagine being caught by the boris bike.. ha

I thought we accused you of being patronising, rather than sexist!

Chapeau
all times are correct because of the digi timing, so if you start a second or two early instead of late...it wouldn't affect your time, still good to have the traditional tdf style countdown though!
