I got an email from you but I don't believe it's an invite (it could be me being thick though).

It is. Just that they don't always let you use it.

I think if you share with somebody who isn't yet on Google+ they get an email that acts as an invite.

I tried sending one to kev83 and rusty, not sure if it worked.

Only issue is that it doesnt seem to be an invite, just an email. Is that right?

The email should be enough to act as an invite, I'm following the method the Lifehacker article tommy linked outlined. People are saying you can get in without an invite now, but I just kept clicking the email "invite" until I got through.

It seems to work, kev83 and rusty have accounts at least. If it's over capacity it will just forward you to the normal "keep me posted" page though.
