  • This rocking chair (in the background) is going begging, if anyone is interested.

Not sure of wood. Other than it is wood.

    Better pictures next week.

  • Got any plate glass windows or a mirror big enough to check?

Use something 'known flat' to measure the deviation in the floor? Good idea. Will have a think. I have a very large glass tabletop desk but it weighs a tonne and all my stuff is on it...but I'm sure there's other stuff we could use.

  • Just need to make room for 4 feet…

  • Where do people go for furniture these days that isn't IKEA/next/m&s?

I don't mind a bit of John Lewis but would like more options.

Basically where did all the furniture stores go?

  • Spirit level?
    Large chopping board?
    Short section of 2x4?

  • Haha! Don't measure the floor you loon, put the chair on the glass desk top and see if it still wobbles!

  • You don’t even need a flat area. Just pack it out then turn the item (and packing).

  • True, but less compelling evidence in email form.

  • Chair is massive though. Nothing it will sit on other than the floor.

Probably would have helped if I had described it correctly as an arm chair or 'small sofa'!

    This is the one, ta.

  • So, we bought some nice Ercol arm chairs, new.

They arrive. They are very 'off'. They look nice though.

In this circumstance, I would have thought the response from the supplier / Ercol would be 'oh, shit, sorry, this must be really disappointing after waiting six months for them, we'll make you some new ones asap'.

But it seems to be 'we 'll get a third party to assess them at your house, and then, something'.

    Do I either

    • go back the supplier, kick up a big fuss, get them to take them away and order new ones, or
    • go along with it, see what happens?

I'm kinda pissed about it, but then, middle-class golf club jerk problems.

  • I'd do the first - they're not fit for purpose or as described an you're protected under cosumer rights act (go to martin lewis site for exact wording). Did you pay on a CC?

I also generally think the level of service is a sliding scale -dropping £100 on something vs a few grand you reasonably have different expectations.

  • I think I'll call the supplier (Viaduct) on Tuesday. It was all paid for on CC, yeah.

I also generally think the level of service is a sliding scale -dropping £100 on something vs a few grand you reasonably have different expectations.

Yeah I think so. FWIW, we've had a terrible run recently of stuff turning up fucked / dented / broken - guess as backlogs are cleared suppliers and shippers are dropping balls all over the place.

We bought some sofa / chairs for our deck and two of them had small cracks in the chairbacks. I offered to fill them then re-finish if they would give me £200 back on the order, instead they sent two brand new chairs (with the cushions as well!) and didn't want the old ones back.

That's kinda the way to do it...they must be running pretty tasty margins though.

  • Hmmm I've always had good dealings with Viaduct so thats a bit odd. If it's on CC you should be fine but ideally you'd just want them to be good about it.

Can be margins, or can just be wanting to maintain their strong customer reviews - a few bad TP reviews can cost £000's

  • hmm i could build a flat around that sideboard. Not sure it would fit on the forum trailer tho

I think you are right. My experience is in used and bespoke-new but most modern furniture seems to cost almost nothing at manufacture ... with the costs being importation, sales, stocking and shipping.

There is a weird trend now for consumers over-compensating for this with 'Oak Furniture Land' type-stuff, with unnecessary over-use of hardwood (using a third more material than necessary - if it were manufactured carefully).

  • Oak Furniture Land grumble grumble grumble

  • Sorry, wasn’t being a snob! It’s not like there’s a great deal of choice.

Just thinking of the poor, poor trees :^(

  • Anyone interested in two OFFI mag side tables and a matching wheelie tray? Going on eBay this weekend otherwise £100 and can post. The leather poang chair and foot stool in the background are for sale too £65 if anyone wants them.

  • No! We have just had an absolutely nightmare with oak furniture land (we just wanted something cheap and ugly as a stop gap) and I will tell anyone who will listen to give them a very wide berth.

  • It’s a copy of an eames aluminium group chair. You can get an original one second hand for that sort of price and it will have removable arms and better quality. Vitra make the modern licensed ea chairs but they were also made by ICF and some other companies. ICF tend to fly under most peoples radar so are a little cheaper. I’ve got 2x vitra lounge chairs and one high back ICF office chair. The quality is identical. If you search ICF chair on eBay you could get a good deal on one. They hold their value too where as the copies don’t. ICF also make a chair which is very similar I think the model is ICF una and can be bought new.

  • Nice. Thanks man.

  • I don't know if you're planning on using it as an actual office chair at a desk but if you are I wouldn't recommend it.

I spend (or did) a fair bit of time out at clients and often get put in meeting rooms with those chairs. They aren't comfortable for sitting at a desk all day.

  • Must be individual preference like saddles. I spent the last year on an Eames Alu with a fixed base and it's brilliant. Has to be non slippery fabric for me though.
If I was buying a dedicated office chair I would get an Aeron, definitely not not not that Humanscale trash we have at the office.
