  • Machine drum for me. Haven't used any of it in ages but I do intend on dusting it down and using it both as a drum machine as well as a sequencer for the analogue synths.

  • Machine Drum - does it do bassy/analoguey/synth parts too, or just beats (mangled or straight)?

  • Heads up for iPad music noodlers - animoog synth app from Moog - 0.69 p for a limited time in the app store - absolutely essential - I've lost hours to it already

    here's the page for it.

I've got a couple of old school designed analogue synths that I'll use use the MD to sequence:

  • Does anyone on here have experience with Ableton or Reaper? Things have moved on a bit since I last wasted weekends prodding various trackers or messed about with my mate's version of Cubase and his Roland soundcard. I've used Reaper very briefly and it's a complicated bastard for someone on a limited time frame for learning new stuff. Wonder if I should bother looking at Ableton? Basically just looking to make noise to annoy neighbours with, nothing serious.

  • Ableton is a piece of piss to use, it comes with pre packed tutorials, once you've got them down yiou're off

  • Cheers man. I'll give it a go. I've seen it used during a live PA set but not for 'production'. Whatever.. anything that drowns out the voices in my head..

  • I find it has the best workflow in terms of getting from inspiration to actual sounds out ya speakers, some really clever design in the gui and effects implementation, fuck it the warp engine alone is worth it. It lacks a little in the editing department but nothing you'll really notice as a hobbyist tbh

  • I've stopped playing around with sample projects and just started going through the tutorials. I can see why it's popular for live stuff. Not yet worked out how to assign samples to mdk pads but I'm sure it's in the tutes. Wish I had more time. It'll give me something to do other than find new pubs during winter I guess.

  • How you getting on with Live? I just took the plunge and upgraded my Live Lite version to Live 8 as there is 25% off just now - so looking forward to learning it

  • Just seen this thread.
Is there a 'spam thread' for music by people on the board? Would be interested to hear.

I use Live for live sets and mastering.
    For composing I use Renoise.

Multi-Grooves: Envious of your Machine Drum. Last summer in Berlin I wasted a beautifully sunny day indoors pissing about on one. Don't regret it. Amazing machine.

  • I bought a midi keyboard/controller and basically haven't touched it since! FML

Thanks for the link if I get some time I'll give it a go.

  • Tend to only use controllers for live mixing. Good for triggering samples and effects. Can't be fucked with having to go back to edit stuff I've done on controllers. Would rather play about with filter curves and notes on a grid. Not as intuitive, but I like the pinpoint accuracy.

How do you use the machinedrum to sequence the modular? I've got a little euro modular and always looking for tips incorporating it with midi and sequencers.

  • I got the Doepfer Dark Energy analogue synth and the Doepfer Dark time analogue sequencer a few weeks back - it's taken me a while to figure how to patch things (CV, not using MIDI just now) - this is using the Korg Monotribe synth to sequence the Dark Time, which is then sequencing the Dark Energy - just using the drums from the Monotribe on this one, not the synth. Pretty basic but good fun

  • anyone any experience with Point Blank music school? I've watched some of their sample class videos and quite impressed and have spoken to them about their Live courses

  • Check out The DSP Project

A mate of mine runs's it and he has some tutorials for Ableton and Controllers. He will normally reply to any questions you might have as well.

Got the urge to mess around again and finally worked out how to assign keyboard knobs to VSTi "knobs" for synth knob tweaking loveliness. Fuck yeah!

Anyone know how to soundproof a room....

  • egg boxes 'innit? or sound foam

  • I was only half joking. Not gonna happen in my lounge. Will just have to move to headphones if neighbours cry.

Wish I'd spent more time reading manuals for some of this stuff. In the end it was a guessed setting and bam Knob Power! :)

Loving that setup you've got. Wish I could do this without needing a computer.

  • Right, so playing techno drum patterns sounds like shit due to my lack of timing.
I've just manually put together a drum track using Reaper's midi note editor thing.
This reminds me of how my mate used to do it back in the day.
I guess I can get used to this dull task but the problem is then recording more audio tracks. It seems to cry and do nothing when adding more VSTi tracks.
Meh. WIsh I knew what I was even talking about.

  • can you not copy and paste your midi pattern into a new track and then insert your instrument onto the track - that's what I do in Ableton

  • Meh. WIsh I knew what I was even talking about.

    Don't worry, you're on LFGSS.

  • Got it sussed now. Copy and paste drum track and set synth channel as recordable channel. Can then play synth along with drum track and it'll record it.
