You won't cut through the BB axle, as it'll most likely be made out of boron, and be super hardened too, so a saw just won't bite. Try bracing the crank when you hit it - place something under it like a pipe or a block of wood, so that the force from the hit goes through the pin, rather than vibrating out. Also, use a punch on the cotter pin, don't just wildly hit it with a hammer, as you want to direct the most force into downward movement. We've had plenty in and out of the Links, never had one irremovable.

Going to have to try and cut a bottom bracket axle to see how tough they are now ha ha

Good luck to you, I really don't think man power will get through one, power tools will probably do some damage though!

This is exactly what I was thinking whilst reading Alex's previous post!

Anyone got a headset press? Need to install a heatset on my Macinato and don't fancy ruining either the headset or frame ...
-
• #33
Matt at The Dandy Horse does, not sure if he'd let you do it yourself though. Alternatively - http://forums.bicycletutor.com/thread-922.html

Any one have a campag bb tool? Think I may need one for my miche bb.
-
• #42
Anyone got a chain whip and a lockring remover? Changing my cog over.
-
• #43
screwdriver hammer and rotafix
you don't need any tools then.
Well you do if you haven't got a screwdriver and a hammer -
• #44
Got the lockring off, but the cog won't budge.
-
• #45
Remember cog is the opposite way to undo as its not a left hand thread.

^^ Had this problem a while ago. Pedal Revolution took mine off for £2 which I thought was a bargain as it was quite seized.
I had taken it into UK Cycles first but it was so stuck that it managed to rip their vice off their work bench! I made my excuses and left quietly before they could complain..... -
• #47
Rotafix worked nicely in the end :-)
-
• #48
Yeah pretty much if rotafix won't undo it its stuck.
You can get an awful lot of torque using the wheel as a lever Definately enough to take the thread off a hub . -

Not a tool as such but does anyone have a set of dumbells (up to 15kg) I could borrow for about a month? Will repay in beer/coffee etc.
-
• #50
I have a pair, only about 7kg on each though.
Drilling through the cotter pin with increasing sized bits until there is no coter pin left
Will ruin the bottom bracket spindle and take quite a while.
If you don't want the cranks I'd personally just hacksaw/angle grind through the bottom bracket axle and bin them.
