Breaking at the elbow?
-
• #128
What are you doing to the poor bike? I've had 1 spoke break and that was due to a pedal wheel collision.
-

their 2mm steel and i do have a wheelcover but i hate the thing, it just seems like a break a lot of spokes, more than any other wheel i've ever had for polo. is the general rule, lower tension less breakages or are their other factors?
Usually spoke will break at the elbow, sometimes the nipple. They shouldn't break in the middle (manufacturing problem).
If it's an old hub the eyelet can wear creating a larger hole which produces play in the spoke and therefore stresses it until it fails.
A front wheel should be evenly tensioned on both sides. More even tensions are better as a general rule. Hence why on dished rear wheels the non-drive side - having lower tension (60-70%) - tends to brake more spokes.
1) If you break a spoke and keep riding, it will put the other spokes under more strain.
2) If you're rim is warped/bent (not wonky because of uneven tension) and you try to true it, the tension will not be even. -

This:

It's because it is alu, hence if you get one of the top end Beemers or Audi and you dent a fender you need to replace it and not go to a bodyshop and get it knocked back. It wont be the same even if it looks the same.

If you knock the rim back into a decent straight line then the tension should end up pretty even. The reason it's not even is because you are pulling against the buckle so have to tighten 1 side more than the other to straighten it out, also fenders ain't really structural and rims are.

• #132
^^ That would be because "fenders" on cars are made of plastic. Something to do with crumple zones and crash protection

It's the characteristic of alu, you can reshape steel but not alu ;)

They are alu, smart runs 'plastic' fenders but more composite material. You are confused between fenders and bumpers?
-
• #134
Fenders is just an americanism of bumpers isn't it?
-
• #135
You can reshape aluminium, it's just not as good at it as steel, the hardened aluminium used for rims probably won't be great for reshaping but I'm sure it's possible sometimes, the majority of car body work is steel anyway, so it's a bit of a shit comparison.

• #136
Which bit of 'top end Beemer and Audi' and 'fender' dont you understand? You bringing in 'majority of body work' dont hold water mate.
-
• #137
What do you mean by fender?
-
• #138
Obviously not the one with strings attached to it ;)
What do you mean by Fender?

So, i've been thinking about going front disc only for a while, but don't know a huge amount about discs. it seems like the avid bb7 road mechanical is fairly common. it seems like mechanical would be what i'm after as it's both cheaper and easier to maintain. don't feel the extra modulation and stopping power are completely justified for polo. also, at some stage in the future i could want dual brakes, either both disc or disc and v-brake. mechanical would seem a lot easier to accomplish this.
as for disc hubs in particular, i'm somewhat clueless. my front is 100mm spacing, 48 hole. is there much on the market for these? i can imagine that with some searching, it would be fine. i'm more concerned with rears. at the moment i have a 120mm spaced, 700c rear. so trying to find a 48h, 120mm disc hub seems to be quite tricky. was looking around earlier and nothing came up. any one have ideas?

Front the front there's the Halo Spin Doctor. I'm getting the rear when I have the money, rear is 135mm spaced though so no good for you

I doesn't it exist for the front, not in 48h.
I've been looking for something similar, it doesn't exist, just getting a custon drilling you can have 48h front hub with disc.
Aswell for the rear, there are no 120mm spaced hubs for disc brake, if your dropouts were 135mm you could get the Halo doctor spin -

Clearly you haven't been searching hard enough

This ^.
Unless I find a 48h hub cheap on the bay Winstanleys is where I'm going to buy my hubs from. -
• #144
F*ck....I'm going to need a new front wheel then.....
-
• #145
So you will be selling your newly built front wheel? :)

That was fast! Let me use it a litle bit more....

extremely stupid question (probably): what 36h 135mm rear hubs will take a freewheel or do they all?
-
• #148
Screw on freewheel you mean?
Trials hubs.
Some double sided, some with disc mounts - http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/135mm_fixed_hubs/c21.html
