  • You can't see it.. its always behind you.

  • Did anyone else see the enviro protest people this morning? I enjoyed the utterly predictable reaction of every gammon in a van being prevented from crossing Vauxhall bridge

  • I did not, I usually use Lambeth bridge... to be fair, if someone randomly keeps me from getting to work, I'd be pretty annoyed too.

  • If you can be arsed, the judges summing up is interesting as to whats expected of a cyclist in these circumstances.

    https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/sentencing-remarks-hhj-wendy-joseph-qc-r-v-alliston.pdf

You shouted at her twice to (in your own words) ‘get out of the
fucking way’. She reached almost the centre of the road but could not go further
because of on-coming traffic. On your own account you did not try to slow any more
but, having shouted at her twice, you took the view she should get out of your way.
You said in evidence ‘I was entitled to go on’. That meant threading a path between
her in the middle of the road and a parked lorry on your left.

From that I taken that a verbal warning is a bad idea and will count again you if the worst happens.

As an aside the judges comments regarding her not being able to go any further because of on coming traffic in the other lane always boils my piss. No suggestion that they should have know she was in danger, no suggestion that they should be performing an emergency stop.

  • I'd look at it the other way around, if you have time to properly shout at people (rather than just let out a loud "OY" like I usually do because it's super last second and there isn't more time than that), you should really really be able to avoid hitting them too, never mind hitting them at >10mph when you were only going at 18mph.

  • Thoroughly enjoying the horn sounds at E&C as the climate change folk do their thing

  • what they doing?

  • Could hear a car approaching for a totally needless close pass (to get ahead to a 100m queue of stopped vehicles at lights). As it came past very close, < 20cm, i punched the side of the car and gave a hearty 'fuck off cunt'. Turned and there was a small kid in the passenger seat, mum on the phone. All rather surprised at this turn of events.

I felt guilty but perhaps, given above, they learnt a valuable lesson?

  • Blocking the junction, aided by a bus trying to do a 3 point turn.

They needa "honk to show your support" sign.

  • Why guilty? If the driver hadn't been on the phone, maybe she would have been more attentive, passed you more safely and avoided having to explain two new words to her child...

(I do try and avoid swearing, gesticulating, punching, etc. near children - especially my own! Sometimes the swear just fall out, though!)

  • Does it not depend on how quickly you talk?

I'm quite slow and can only usually manage about half a swear word before performing an enormous stoppie...

  • From that I taken that a verbal warning is a bad idea and will count again you if the worst happens.

Riding like a cunt is what counts against you. I think the judge was trying to illustrate that if you have time to shout at someone twice there was ample opportunity for a more appropriate reaction. Even if brklss.

Alliston & Jones should both have not been on the road.

Only Jones had previous convictions. Lied to DVLA about his diabetes.

Alliston was doing 18mph on a bike, Jones was at 40mph in a ton of metal.

Alliston received 18 months, Jones walked free.

  • Oh yeah for sure. Basically, situations where I'd have enough time to say "get out of the
fucking way" (never mind twice) are not situations that are so urgent that I'd feel heated enough to say anything at all...

    @spindrift

Yeah I don't think anyone on here is arguing that cyclists in general should be punished more, or that the situation is even as it is. But I don't subscribe to the view that just because murderous car drivers get away with this shit, cyclists should be treated any differently.

(I do however very much object to the whole idea of new laws for 'dangerous cycling' or whatever, because that is just pure populist bullshit)

  • Jim Davidson was stuck at the front - got out of his car shouted at
the Police “Why aren’t you moving them?” - when a protestor tried to
talk to him he said he didn’t talk to lefties. One gag: “Climate
change ? Don’t they like being warmer!!” .

  • Was he riding like *unt (front brake aside) 18mph in the 30 mph limit. He had 3.5 to react and brake/swerve, drivers are generally given about 2.5 seconds to react in these type of situations to a dithering ped dancing about the lane. Witness say they heard one shout and looked up to see the impact charlie say he shout twice. braked, and swerved, seams reasonable to me can't say I would have done much different in the circumstances.

  • If you're cycling at just 18mph, have 3.5s to react, and you still crash into the person, you're kinda riding like a cunt by definition unless that person is literally throwing themselves in front of your bike. "Front brake aside" I'm not sure is a valid exclusion either, personally I'm very much of the opinion that it would have helped. It certainly saved me from doing an Alliston when that lady walked out into the road last Friday.

  • The circumstances were that the pedestrian was available to be seen
for less than 4 seconds prior to stepping into collision with the bus.

    http://www.farrarsbuilding.co.uk/matthew-kerruish-jones-successfully-defends-bus-driver-prosecuted-for-colliding-with-pedestrian-in-south-london/

Mrs Briggs stepped out from behind a parked lorry, the bus driver's victim was on a zebra.

  • Hay, in a lot of way I with you, but I'd love for the same standard to be applied to motorists, there would be many more going to prison if they were.

  • Oh fuck yeah! Most definitely. It's a joke how much you can get away with as long as you're behind a wheel and 'the other guy' is on a bike. Completely agree there.

  • It's difficult, isn't it? Pedestrians always have the right of way. For instance, I had a situation a couple of months back going through Tooting...

Couple of chaps walked out from between cars to cross the road as I was overtaking. That was fine, I was riding at an appropriate speed (I thought), which allowed them to pass in front of me before I got there. So, all good. Except, someone behind me shouted at them and one of them (not both for some reason) decided that, having got most of the way across, the safest option was to head back from whence they came. Now they were right in front of me. Fortunately, my brakes worked (very well, as it happened, causing a rather impressive stoppie) and I stopped without hitting him. Quick swear (more our of relief than anger) and I was on my way; no more said.

What I should have done, I suppose, is stop and wait until they had both arrived safely at their destination on the pavement.
