Just going back to what you were saying earlier, about not being able to ride on a full stomach? That's where you need to be quite tactical with your consumption of quality fuel. Where possible, if you can feed well early on with the slow burn foods, then use some quick release foods 20mins before your journeys, you can ride anything! Hydration is key as well.
We can get you sorted in no time.... -

What i eat for work:-
0800 - Huge bowl of porridge with fruit.
1030 - Big (fruity) Flapjack + Choc bar.
1400 - 1 cheese and 1 egg Baguette + Another (nutty) Flapjack + whatever anyone gives me.

I wouldn't trust ANYTHING the Daily Mail rag has to say! Didn't they print a story that cycling gives you cancer or some shit last month?!
Amongst other newspapers the Daily Mail is notoriously full of shit. They reported that cycling causes heart attacks; here's the Guardian's riposte http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/green-living-blog/2011/feb/25/myth-cycling-heart-attacks
Ya might find this of interest too http://www.badscience.net/2011/03/why-dont-journalists-link-to-primary-sources/
Maybe backwards of me but I'm so suspicious of gels, powders, fake stuff?
You're right to - although they can be useful, if you are a healthy person with a good diet then there's no need for them, unless you have a medical reason. Most people can get all the nutrition they need from real actual food... I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that thoughWinston gives some good advice.. drinking some water with your food while cycling can help you absorb it though - sometimes your gut will not absorb food without some water, particularly if you're riding hard and are a bit dehydrated

I once tried a pre mixed PSP energy drink whilst mtbing, never again. Granted it did give me a burst of energy but the trade off was feeling rather perculier. Not good.
I stick to an emergency Twix in my day pack now. -

Cheap baguette shop does Egg Salad and Cheese Salad footlongs for 50p each, sometimes free if you're regular and buy ten or so baguettes for the whole office.
Also Holland & Barrett do 2 for 1 on their flapjacks quite often
You can eat pretty cheap in the city centre

#goingliketheclappers. You can make some cracking oaty sort-of flapjacks with milk, oats & peanut butter. You dont even need to add in any extra fat, makes a great high energy snack.
