Yasi,
remember this on ANZAC day 25 April.. to the fallen at Gallipoli, a failed campaign during World War I where Churchill sent many young men to a pointless and unnecessary slaughter.."Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives,
You are now living in the soil of a friendly country.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours
You, the Mothers
Who sent their sons from far away countries
wipe away your tears
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
and are in peace
after having lost their lives on this land they have
become our sons as well"- ataturk 1934

Ottoman Empire still existed under 100 years ago when they ethnically cleansed 1.5 million Armenians. Receives surprisingly little media attention, despite the fact that it more-or-less wiped out a whole nation

That's the thing with ethnic cleansing. If you manage to do it there's no-one left to speak out about it.

Yep, genocide is definitely a modern thing then.
Ottomans were 'orrible, though. Seljuks even worse. From the outsider's perspective of course. The good thing is, we used to share a border and loads of the nice things came to my country via Turkey - spices, nuts, raisins, sweets, fancy fabrics.

another history lesson
british rule until 1915
republic of cyprus form where turkey relinquished any claim
prior to invasion, 11 years of violence between greek and turkish communities

I was just going to post that. Tears me up, that does. Beautiful, heartfelt and humble sentiment put so well. Ataturk was one of the greatest leaders of men.
